Contingency issues addressed for Whole Foods site

Contingency issues are being addressed on a proposed mixed use development at 51st and Oak, which includes a Whole Foods and 150 market-rate apartments. They include a driveway cut through the Trolley Track trail to add a Brookside Boulevard entrance and use of parking spaces belonging to neighboring Central United Methodist Church. The driveway cut proved unpopular with local neighborhood associations, which feared increased traffic congestion and dangers for cyclists and pedestrians who use the trail. Robert Simmons, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Administration, said there are negotiations underway between neighborhood groups and Whole Foods, which was confirmed as a tenant in July. Central United Methodist confirmed it is in discussions about the parking situation. The project involves a private partnership with developers DST and Van Tuyl Trust. It would also include 7,000-14,000 square feet of office … Read entire article »

A whole new grocery store

A proposed Whole Foods market at 51st and Oak streets is the first in Kansas City, Mo. It will also be the first grocery store within a comfortable walking distance from the Volker campus. Included in this mixed use project are approximately 150 units of market-rate (non-subsidized) apartments above the store, featuring a parking garage for residents. The project will also include a surface parking lot for Whole Foods and office space for UMKC health services, currently located in the 4825 Troost building. “I would say that it is still in the development [stage] because there are contingencies that need to be resolved before we can say 100 percent for sure that it’s happening,” said Robert Simmons, assistant vice chancellor of administration. Simmons said the development fits well into the campus’s master plan, which urges … Read entire article »

Organic food for thought

A new possibility that has been part of a multi-year discussion may join the ranks of the other recent Oak Street developments. Rumors of an organic grocery store, specifically Whole Foods, have been abuzz, potentially replacing a metered parking lot and two buildings on the southwest corner of 51st and Oak streets. Whole Foods was mentioned specifically in a 2009 post on Blog KC, stating that Whole Foods is considering expanding its smaller Midtown Wild Oats location, which reopened as a locally-owned organic grocery in 2010. It was also said that associations in surrounding neighborhoods were being consulted. The rumors circulated more recently on www.kcrag.com, a local development forum. At the moment, there are no official plans set for this location, but many options have been proposed and considered over the past few years. “We … Read entire article »

Nature’s Own opens

Nature’s Own opens

A new, organic grocery store, Nature’s Own Health Food Market, has opened at 43rd and Main street, in the previous Wild Oats location. Local organic enthusiasts were dismayed when Whole Foods closed the Wild Oats store in early July 2010 as part of an anti-trust settlement with the Federal Trade Commission. The name “Nature’s Own” is reminiscent of the space’s previous name in the 1980s when owned by Zoe LaGrece, Clearly Nature’s Own. “We wanted to bring it … Read entire article »
