The Brick

Where you’re more than just another brick in the wall By going to the same bar every night, you expect to see the same folks every time. These people may not be your friends, but hey, at least everybody knows your name. The Brick, one of Kansas City’s most infamous bars, is located at 18th and McGee streets in Kansas City. The small nighttime hotspot boasts a patronage that may just as well have been plucked straight from an episode of “Cheers.” During a visit to the Brick, you’re sure to find Sam Malone’s equivalent pouring drafts with a smile and Norm Peterson’s quipping left and right. Plus, everyone’s favorite mailman, Cliff Clavin, ranting about this and that will be there as Dr. Frasier Crane sits by, psychoanalyzing his every word. These “usuals” … Read entire article »

‘Feelin’ fine!’

‘Feelin’ fine!’

It is now the midpoint of my seventh semester at UMKC and I find myself playing the same old game I started back in 2007. It all seems kind of mundane and boring. I am not going to use the term “senioritis” because it is lame and I am only a junior. I … Read entire article »

Losing my best friend back in May was the hardest thing I have experienced in my 22 years. The shock and disbelief that crushed me the moment I got word gave me that “slap in the face” and “snap to reality” feeling. I never want … Read entire article »

Local Band “My New TV Set” Repped in Scott Pilgrim Video Contest

Chances are, if you enjoyed Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, your musical tastes might skew towards the independent, local variety. In that case, you might want to pay attention to a KC-based band called “My New TV Set,” who won a music-video contest sponsored by the film. “After looking into it and reading the synopsis of the movie, it just made sense to put our song in [the contest],” said frontman Dustin McKamie. The band heard about the opportunity through Sonicbids, a website aimed at connecting musicians and promoters. McKamie, though unaware at this early stage what the movie would be about, saw from the previews for the film the band’s song “Where I Want to Be” might make a good fit, and sent it in. “The song is about love and wishful thinking, … Read entire article »
