Shooting near campus first 2013 homicide in Kansas City

UMKC, Kansas City and Rockhurst security officers responded to an incident at 52nd Street and Troost Avenue on Jan. 3. The suspect, identified as Chandler T. Guinn, 23, was fatally shot by a Rockhurst University security officer, the city’s first homicide of 2013. The security officer shot Guinn after he emerged from an immobilized vehicle that hit another car, pointing a gun at the officers. The suspect died later at the hospital. Police said Guinn’s vehicle was seen ramming into the back of another car on 52nd Street, and his car broke down at the 52nd and Troost Avenue intersection when he attempted to drive away. Guinn was offered medical help after the accident, but refused any assistance. Tearing down the Troost Wall: Students, long-time residents call Troostwood neighborhood home

The Troostwood neighborhood is home to many UMKC and Rockhurst students. Located between Troost Avenue, The Paseo, Volker Boulevard and Rockhurst’s campus, this area shares the stigma of crime and neglect that plagues many neighborhoods east of Troost. Those who have negative opinions of this area usually have never set foot on the other side of the Troost Wall. Since becoming a resident the summer of 2011, I have come to appreciate my neighborhood’s historic beauty. Troostwood was born in the early 20th century around the time the Plaza was developed. Many homes in this neighborhood are surrounded by beautiful stone retaining walls, and many feature exquisite exterior detailing and architectural accents. Beautiful paned windows and stained glass can be admired from the outside, while beautiful woodwork and crystal chandeliers adorn the inside. Most … Read entire article »

Tearing down the Troost wall

It is rare to come across a politician with the refreshing candor and sincerity of Mayor Sly James. Discussions of race can easily become contentious, especially in a city haunted by a history of strained race relations. In an area where previous mayors have failed, James has made tremendous progress. Last fall, I covered a town hall at UMKC devoted to the mayor’s first 100 days in office. Hosted by the NAACP – Young Adult Conference and other sponsors, the mayor fielded questions about progress in key policy areas. I was genuinely impressed by the mayor’s call to work past the barriers that divide us. “We have to stop this nonsense of north and south of the river and east and west of Troost,” he said. “We need to quit acting like there’s a … Read entire article »
