Discussion continues on downtown arts campus
The most likely scenario for the proposed Downtown Arts Campus is a phased build out, beginning with the relocation of the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance. The project, which has a strong civic support, includes a $90 million price tag. Robert Simmons, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Administration, said private donors and matching funds from the state of Missouri are being pursued. Simmons said timing will depend entirely on how quickly donors can be identified. “The potential donors and meetings with the donors are probably about the first thing the Chancellor and [Conservatory Dean Peter] Witte think about in the morning and the last thing they think about at night,” he said. No public information, however, is currently available. “The discussions at this point have been focused on a phased creation,” Simmons said. “The site selection … Read entire article »

Chancellor drops name change proposal: Theatre Department, A&S faculty voice strong support for existing name
“We will remain the University of Missouri-Kansas City for the foreseeable future,” Chancellor Leo E. Morton announced in a letter to the UMKC community Friday afternoon. For several months, Morton held town hall meetings and spoke to faculty, staff, students, community members and UMKC stakeholders. In mid-October, a survey was emailed to all current students, staff and faculty, and a mail-in survey was featured in “Perspectives,” the UMKC alumni magazine. Prospective students and community members were also able … Read entire article »

Theatre Department petitions chancellor to abandon UMKC name change proposal
A petition urging Chancellor Leo Morton to drop the UMKC name change proposal has received 104 signatures, including all but one faculty member of the College of Arts and Sciences Theatre Department. Dr. Felicia Hardison Londré, Curator’s Professor of Theatre, is the driving force behind the petition. Londré, who has been at UMKC since 1978, worked with colleagues to draft a petition that challenges many of Morton’s points in support of a name change. “I think the Chancellor will listen if a lot of people don’t want a name change,” said Ron Schaeffer, professor of theatre in stage management and a UMKC alumnus. The petition contends that a name change would dramatically decrease the credibility of the UMKC professional theatre training program, nationally recognized for excellence. “It [UMKC] is something that is proven, trusted,” … Read entire article »

‘Form Follows Function’ Exhibit showcases Theatre department’s costumes, lighting and scenic design work
On Friday, Dec. 2, the UMKC Theatre Department opened an exhibit at the Box Gallery in the Commerce Bank building at 1000 Walnut St. The exhibit is called “Form Follows Function,” and its primary goal is to highlight the hard work the costume, lighting and scenic design graduate students contribute to UMKC performances behind the scenes. The exhibit showcases costumes that have been used in UMKC Theatre productions (such as “Our Town” and “Great Expectations”), as well as small-scale replicas of a variety of different sets. Sarah M. Oliver, visiting assistant professor of Costume Technology, spoke briefly about the model sets. “I think a lot of times, the people in the audience don’t realize we do this work for the director,” she said. The scenic design students make models like the … Read entire article »
