Women’s Basketball: Amid blizzards, an avalanche for the ‘Roos

Saturday’s 47-33 home loss to Indianapolis is another disappointment for a struggling team. The ’Roos now stand 9-19 for the season and 5-10 in the Summit League. Saturday’s loss follows a 63-38 blowout loss to Western Illinois at Swinney Recreation Center on Thursday. Home court advantage has not panned out for the ’Roos. In January away games, the team edged out Western Illinois for a narrow 51-50 victory while losing 47-46 to Indianapolis. Eilise O’Connor led the team on Saturday with 10 points. Hailey Houser led with six rebounds. O’Connor also led Thursday’s game with 17 points. Emile Blakesley led with eight rebounds. Teams get back on the right track

The men’s and women’s basketball teams both showed signs of breaking out of prolonged dry spells with victories over Summit League rival Fort Wayne. The men concluded a successful three-game road swing with a 63-59 victory at Fort Wayne, Ind., on Saturday. In his second game back from injury, Trinity Hall hit two free throws with 14 seconds left to put the Roos ahead by four points and assure the win. Two victories on their trip boosted the Roos’ record to 6-14, including 3-5 in the Summit League. The Roos decisively turned up their defensive pressure by holding the Mastodons without a field goal for the final 5:15. Wheels turning without fossil fuels burning

What is a good way to avoid parking tickets, rush hour traffic, high gas prices and crowded parking garages while maintaining a nice physique and making it to school on time? Commute to school by bicycle. All Kansas City buses have bike racks, and all UMKC Student IDs double as a free, all-access bus pass.   UMKC offers several resources on campus for bicycle commuters, including numerous bike racks. Some include air pumps to help out stressed tires. UMKC offers three locations for various biking needs:   The Hub offers students, faculty and staff the opportunity to loan a bike for up to a semester. Coffee House Series adds new atmosphere to Student Union

The Student Union now hosts a Coffeehouse and Karaoke Series once a month on Thursdays from 3-5 p.m. The most recent installment of the series took place Thursday, March 22 on the stage near Jazzman’s Cafe. Both students and faculty can enjoy freshly brewed coffee, study for upcoming exams or chat with friends in a relaxed atmosphere. “The idea for the series was developed as part of the Union Programming Task Force,” Director of Student Involvement Angie Cottrell said. “This group is one of the strategic planning groups for the university.” Cottrell emphasizes anyone is eligible to participate in the performances. Students, faculty and staff who would like to perform can either sign up in advance or show up during a coffee house session. Those wanting an opportunity to perform karaoke can pick out a song to sing on a first-come-first-serve basis. The Coffeehouse Series pleases a variety of interests.
