Men’s basketball cites improved defense as key to winning season
Despite being predicted to finish 7th in the Summit League preseason polls, the men’s basketball team has a healthy level of confidence about the upcoming season. The team, which won its Saturday exhibition opener against Ottawa 88-56, returns four starters from last season, including last season’s second leading scorer, junior Trinity Hall, who averaged 10 points per game. “My expectations for myself are to do better than I did last year,” Hall said. Hall said he needs to help pick up the scoring slack for Reggie Chamberlain, who finished his last UMKC season averaging 17.3 points per game. “I know we got to fill Reggie’s shoes,” Hall said. Men’s soccer rebounds: Team 3-1 in Summit League play
At first the men’s soccer team struggled to score the way Coach Rick Benben expected. But halfway through the season, the story changed. The Roos are now 3-1 in the Summit League. The Roos lost their winning streak with a tough 3-1 loss to the Oakland Grizzlies Saturday night in an away game. The three remaining conference games will determine if the team qualifies for the playoffs. The eight new players have been an excellent fit for the team and have made individual contributions for the team’s success. Volleyball enjoys undefeated week in league matches
The Roos’ volleyball team won its second Summit Conference game in a week by defeating South Dakota 3-2 on Saturday night in Vermillion, S.D. Senior Emily Lucas recorded a career-high 34 kills and, with 12 digs, posted her team-leading seventh double-double of the season. Freshman Jessica Hendin totaled six kills and a career-high 17 digs, while freshman Nicole Wemhoff finished with career bests of 33 assists and 14 digs. The advantage swung back and forth as the Roos took the opening set 25-15, then dropped the next two 27-25 and 25-21.They won the fourth set 25-20, forcing a fifth set. Volleyball team 2-2 in Summit League following weekend games
After a 3-0 home loss to Fort Wayne on Sunday, the volleyball team stands 9-7 overall and 2-2 in the Summit League. A 3-2 win against Oakland last Friday, this season’s home opener, gave the Roos reason to be optimistic. According to Sports Information Director Nik Busch, Oakland won the last four times it faced UMKC; however, the Roos lead overall in the two rivals’ history of competition. The team endured a two-and-a-half-hour practice on Tuesday, Sept. 18. Reinvigorating the Roos : Team seeks to build momentum from Summit League opener win
A 2-1 home win against Fort Wayne last Saturday gives the men’s soccer team reason to hope. The conference victory brings the Roos to 2-4-2 for the season and 1-0 in Summit League Play. Head Coach Rick Benben expressed optimism that the team will bounce back despite a 1-4-2 start, but he acknowledges the Roos have struggled with games on the road. “We play a real demanding schedule,” Benben said. “All the teams we have played have been really top rated teams. Men’s soccer team promises a great season for UMKC
The time has come for the men’s soccer team to prove its skills. This year’s squad hopes to bring the title of the Summit League championship back to UMKC. What’s new for this year’s team? Nine new players joined the Roos: one goalkeeper, one defender, five midfielders and two forwards. This means Coach Rick Benben’s team has a lot new to offer on the field. Roos nail down top seed for men’s Summit League tennis championshipsYOU
The men’s tennis team enjoyed a weekend sweep with 7-0 victories over Western Illinois on Sunday and Oral Roberts on Friday night. Sunday’s victory gave the Roos a 4-1 Summit League record and a three-way tie for the regular-season championship. They will be top seeded in the Summit League Championships. On Sunday in Macomb, Ill., the Roos won all doubles and singles matches. In doubles, No.1 pair Grant Fleming and Cameron Schoenhofer won 8-3, the same score as a victory by Gustavo Guerin and Abdulrahman Alawadhi in the No.2 match. In singles, No.1 player Fleming was the only Roo to lose a set. He was pushed to a tie-breaker and defeated Patrick Hammers 1-6, 6-3, 10-1. Men’s tennis completes undefeated weekend
The men’s tennis team capped an undefeated weekend while gaining its first Summit League victory of the season, 5-2 over the IPFW Mastodons at the Plaza Tennis Center on Saturday evening. After a four-hour rain delay, the Roos won the doubles point by taking two of three hotly contested matches. In the No.1 match, Grant Fleming and Tim Akhmedov fell 8-5, before Guerin and Abdulrahman Alawadhi won the No. 2 match, 8-4. In the No. 3 match, which determined the doubles point, the No. 3 pair of Conner Edwards and Tomas Patino won the last six games for an 8-3 victory. Softball team defeats Jackrabbits 12-1 to take series
The softball team improved to 17-20 (5-7 in Summit League play) by taking two out of three games against league rival South Dakota State in Brookings, S.D. last weekend. The Roos took the series with a 12-1 victory Saturday over of the Jackrabbits (8-19-1, 3-9) in a game ended after six innings by virtue of the mercy rule. The Roos got off to a 3-0 lead Saturday in the first two innings, increased their lead to 5-1 in the third and piled on seven more runs in the fifth and six innings.
