Women’s Basketball: ‘Roos one and done in Summit league tornament with loss to Indianapolis

The women’s basketball team, which last season reached the championship game of the Summit League Championship, this time was knocked out in the first round with a 59-47 loss Saturday to second-seeded IUPUI at Sioux Falls, S.D. This marked the Roos’ third loss this season to the Jaguars and their farewell appearance in the Summit League before starting play in the Western Athletic Conference next season. Kansas City, the tournament’s seventh seed, also lost this season to IUPUI 47-46 at Indianapolis and 47-33 at home. “It was a hard game, this is a team whose style is dramatically different from us, which made it harder for us” said Coach Marsha Frese. “They are a great team, they like to get to the basket and run as much as they can.” Before the tournament … Read entire article »

Men’s Tennis: Team Toughened up for conference play

UMKC’s men’s tennis team defeated Oral Roberts 4-0 last Sunday at the Carriage Club in a match that was rescheduled due to inclement weather. The Roos have started slowly with a 2-7 non-conference record. “It is all my fault,” Coach Kendell Hale acknowledged. “I scheduled very tough non-conference games.” Hale claimed there is no reason to panic, though. “We are known for our slow starts” he said. “I am pretty sure we will do great in the conference.” In 2012, the squad overcame numerous injuries early in the season and captured a share of a third consecutive regular-season Summit League title. Hale seems confident his team will succeed again. “The big thing is unity, coming together as a team,” he said. “This is an individual sport played in a team format.” Despite the team’s record, some players have … Read entire article »

‘A season of ups and downs’: Eilise O’Connor leads the Roos’ recovery

The Roos’ 62-61 home loss to South Dakota State on Saturday came as a disappointment after Thursday’s 62-60 win against North Dakota State. The good news is that the team’s scoring and defense have improved since the Roos’ 82-47 and 59-48 away losses to those two teams, respectively, on Jan. 3 and 5. A “season of ups and downs” is how Head Coach Marsha Frese described her team’s play during her first season with UMKC. Last year, the Roos were the No. 3 seed in the Summit League and made it all the way to the conference final. This has been a new era for the team after several seniors graduated and Frese took charge. “The ups and downs have contributed to our team’s youth and inexperience,” Frese said. Another factor is Kim Nezianya’s injury, which … Read entire article »

Women’s Basketball: 4-5 team falters in scoring,defense

Marsha Frese, the new women’s basketball coach, took over a program with lofty expectations despite an almost entirely new squad. The team currently sits 4-5 and the roster of 12 includes eight players who, prior to this season, had one Division I start between them. Along with those newcomers are three returning starters, Ashli Hill and captains Eilise O’Connor and Kim Nezianya. “It’s great,” said Frese, a long-time assistant. “It’s everything I expected, and then some. It’s just nice after many years of what I thought was paying my dues, just to have this opportunity to implement a lot of my own philosophy and things I have been working on over the years.” Last year’s team went 22-12 and averaged 72 points a game while holding opponents to 66 points a game. That is part … Read entire article »
