Outlaw Economics: Progressive economists talk job creation, politics at the Student Union

Progressive economists talk job creation, politics at the Student Union Outlaw economists may not have broken any laws, but their support for progressive policies puts them at odds with the establishment. This group of heterodox economists challenges the models and assertions of mainstream business leaders, economists, politicians and the media. A teach-in known as Outlaw Economics 2.0, held Friday and Saturday at the Student Union, focused on job creation and preserving entitlement programs that benefit the middle and working class. Among the outlaws are Dr. William Black, an associate professor of economics and law at UMKC, and Dr. James Galbraith, a distinguished scholar and chair at the University of Texas-Austin. Galbraith used the opening keynote lecture to contrast the “outlaws” with what Galbraith termed the “austerity lobby”—deficit hawks and fiscal conservatives focused on reducing the … Read entire article »

Stand-up economist: Making a joke of economics

Opinionated people enjoy endlessly supplying their own commentary about the best ways to fix the economy.  A one-of-a-kind entertainment act which took to the Student Union stage last Monday was more qualified to make jokes and social commentary about Americas’ money spending. In fact, he holds a Ph.D. “You know I’m a real economist because I can make fun of subdivisions [of economics],” said Stand-Up Economist Yoram Bauman. UMKC’s economics chair Stephanie Kelton couldn’t pass up the chance to have Bauman perform on campus.  She noticed one of Bauman’s earlier performances during the same week in Overland Park wasn’t open to the public, so she sent Bauman an email hoping  he would do a public show. His quick response said yes. “I organized an event that would bring people in the community together with … Read entire article »

GOP makes appeal to young voters at national convention

Hurricane Isaac delayed the start of the Republican National Convention Monday, but by Tuesday, the GOP was fired up and ready to campaign. Mitt Romney formally accepted the Republican nomination in a speech Thursday night, seen by more than 30 million viewers. Romney said as president, he would balance the federal budget, reduce taxes for small businesses, repeal the Affordable Health Care act, create new trade agreements and lead the United States to energy independence by utilizing both fossil fuels and renewable energy. “President Obama promised to begin to slow the rise of the oceans and to heal the planet,” Romney said. “My promise is to help you and your family.” To balance the budget, Romney and running mate Paul Ryan have pledged not to raise taxes and instead focus on cutting non-defense federal … Read entire article »

Name change discussions to be heard

When Chancellor Leo Morton dropped the idea of name change for UMKC earlier this year, the idea met both support and opposition. Morton’s suggestion supported the change from “University of Missouri-Kansas City” back to the university’s original identity, “University of Kansas City.” Morton and other supporters believe the name change could uniquely distinguish UMKC as “Kansas City’s university.” The change to UKC, however, would not signal a departure from the University of Missouri system. Others believe the UM designation in the school’s name gives it more national credibility, distinguishing it from for-profit colleges and universities named after cities. Because many students come from the Kansas City area, Morton is hopeful that the university’s proposed name change will garner increased community support. Morton intends to pursue further research and discussion to determine if a name change … Read entire article »

Chick-fil-A’s campus removal unlikely

After Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy expressed his opposition to same-sex marriage because of his biblical beliefs, there was an uproar of media attention, social networking posts and demonstrations both affirming and condemning Cathy’s statements and the restaurant chain’s association with conservative Christian groups that have been labeled as anti-gay. Students at schools across the country, including the University of Kansas and Washburn University, pursued petitions to remove Chick-fil-A from campus. A change.org petition by UMKC student Chris Haywood to remove Chick-fil-A from the Student Union has gathered 794 signatures as of Aug. 18. Haywood cited Goal No. 5 in the Provost’s 10-year Strategic Plan, “to embrace diversity.” Some students have also expressed interest in staging protests demanding Chick-fil-A’s removal from the Student Union. However, the university has a strict policy on student protests on … Read entire article »

Tell that to a plant

Every day I watch the people around me throw away unnecessary amounts of trash, use an abnormally large amount of water and treat the Earth solely as an abundant resource for their personal disposal. A few weeks ago I took a summer course on waste management. We visited a landfill on the first day. I was saddened by the huge amounts of trash our community is forced to try to dispose of and sort. In the materials recovery facility, where recyclables are sorted, a problem was the lack of community effort and awareness of what is recyclable in the city’s curbside recycling program. The piles of recyclables would be cluttered with trash bags and glass bottles that couldn’t be recycled on site. The ignorance of others slows down the environmental progression … Read entire article »
