Counseling Center reaches out to prevent violence,self-injury: Variables often go beyond mental illness

Is mental illness the real culprit? The string of recent mass shootings has led to questions about how violent behavior can be prevented through better counseling and mental health services. According to UMKC Counseling Center research, out of 716 clients last year, approximately three percent indicated that they had intentionally caused serious injury to another person in their life. Eight percent has made a suicide attempt. “Violent behavior, harming someone else may be ‘related’ to mental illness but not ‘predicted’ by mental illness,” said Marita Barkis, Director of Counseling. “In risk assessment or ‘threat assessment’, one needs to focus on a variety of variables.  I would never bet on mental illness alone.  There is a difference.” For students who may be dealing with mental illnesses, the Counseling Center has many services available such as … Read entire article »

UMKC provides free HIV/ STI testing

Last Thursday, UMKC partnered with Student Health and Wellness, the Kansas City, Mo. Health Department and The Good Samaritan Project to sponsor a free health clinic to test for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV. The clinic took place in the Student Union from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The “Know Your Status” program is a free service that offers testing for HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. In addition to testing, the program also offers advice on safe sex and abstinence. The “Know Your Status” clinic usually takes place about twice a month, with two sessions in January and two sessions in February. There will also be two sessions in March. This correspondence is in response to the Letter to the Editor [U-News Issue 6, Sept. 26, 2011] regarding Student Health and Wellness (SHW) not submitting insurance claims. This frustration with claim processing is an opportunity for us, SHW, to clarify self-processing of an insurance claim. Believe it or not, for the most part, self-processing claims with Aetna Student Health Insurance is easy. After the clinic visit, the insured student must pay for services that he or she received during the clinic visit. Payments may be made in the form of cash, check, or charged to one’s student account. After payment, the student is given a walkout statement. IEI of UMKC New Scholarship The UMKC Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (IEI) has a new scholarship all UMKC students are eligible for. The Certificate of Entrepreneurship Scholars Program (CESP) will help a select group of UMKC students to turn opportunities into business ventures. The CESP’s goal is to prepare students for business ventures of their own. All UMKC students are eligible regardless of major and college.
