Concert Review: Maroon 5 sells out Sprint Center, Westboro Baptist Church protests
Despite symptoms of laryngitis, Maroon 5’s lead singer Adam Levine performed to fans’ expectations at the Sprint Center last Wednesday night. Headlining for bands Owl City and Neon Trees, Maroon 5 landed in Kansas City midway through its Overexposed tour. The Sprint Center seating arrangements put anyone in Section 109 at a disadvantage, having to view from behind the stage and limiting the view of each band’s instrumentalists. However, Adam Levine and the lead singer of Neon Trees, Tyler Glenn, did an appreciated job of utilizing all sides of the stage, which was shaped like a giant “M.” There is nothing that puts an emphasis on your age than being surrounded by a swarm of teenage girls, but Neon Trees was on the mark performing a cover of “Don’t You Want Me” originated … Read entire article »

Support our AFL team, KC Command
This past Friday, my husband treated my kids and me to our first arena football game. Our city’s team, the Command, opened the season against the Jacksonville Sharks at the Sprint Center. Since my daughter and I absolutely love football, we were thrilled. When we arrived, I was surprised the stadium wasn’t packed. Not even all of the concession stands were open. An avid attendant of Chiefs games, I expected the spot to be jammed with crazy fans, long lines and lots of noise. What I encountered was just the opposite. Immediately, I went into business mode, considering why attendance was lower than what I thought it should be. My conclusion: a lack of support. There are some key differences between NFL and AFL. For the most part, it’s the same and first-timers … Read entire article »

Briefly Mentioned: UMKC to see car-sharing program
Students who lack vehicular transportation may soon gain access to an inexpensive option. Last week, the Kansas City Council set a vote that would bring car-rental stations to UMKC. Partnering with the Mid-America Regional Council and UMKC, Kansas City is piloting an hourly car-rental program that is expected to be available by the end of the year on the Volker and Hospital Hill campuses. Initially, the program is expected to contain only a couple of cars. However, it could build throughout the city if proven successful. Hourly car rentals are expected to be helpful for people under 25, who suffer an added fee from traditional car rental locations. The Council’s vote was a revision of a previous initiative, passed in 2004 to fund the Sprint Center. Then, voters didn’t include an hourly option. Instead, … Read entire article »

All Around Town: Downtown Kansas City
Your weekly Kansas City neighborhood guide Sure. We’ve all heard of and probably been to the Sprint Center and Midland by AMC, and most of us probably have some interesting stories from our late night run-ins at the Power and Light District. But surprisingly, Downtown doesn’t get very much credit outside of P&L and the Sprint Center. The word “Downtown” is sometimes used generically in KC to refer to the entire urban core, but in this article I … Read entire article »
