Sports unite us all
There is no such feeling as the one experienced with a game-winning goal in the last minute, a three-pointer basket with seconds on the clock or an interception that led to a touchdown. Sports can paralyze a whole town, state or even country. But why? When two teams clash in a pitch, field or court, thousands, and sometimes millions, of people are involved. This is probably is the reason why the World Cup, Super Bowl and World Series find themselves at the very top of television ratings. When I moved to this country less than two years ago, I encountered many things that made me like America even more, especially the love of sports. Kansas City’s passion and love for the Chiefs and Royals really surprised me, mainly because of the terrible seasons they … Read entire article »

Sports medicine staff keeps athletes healthy
When people see an athlete on the field winning a game, they may think of all the work and time put into training. But what happens behind the scenes to address injuries and keep players healthy? The Sports Medicine Staff, employed by UMKC Athletics, is a group of health professionals who oversee the physical and mental well-being of student athletes. These individuals go above and beyond their responsibilities to ensure each patient gets the care and learns the skills needed to remain healthy. When a situation arises such as an injury or other medical condition, they seek the advice and expertise of the physicians. The physicians … Read entire article »

Player Profile : Sports are a family affair for Muff
Skyler Muff’s love for sports is no surprise. The decision wasn’t easy. From Concordia, Kan., the 6-foot-1 graduate from Pittsburg High School, had the choice to pursue basketball, but decided to stick with volleyball. “Since my dad is a basketball coach, I grew up around it,” Muff said. “I have an older sister who plays for K-State, and watching her play made me want to be like her.” A regular day in Muff’s college life begins with morning classes and study hall before heading to volleyball practice, which lasts nearly three hours each day. The volleyball team … Read entire article »

What’s the Difference?
Sports in movies gloss over a less exciting reality Everyone’s seen it: the ending scene in a sports movie with five seconds left on the clock. The protagonist’s team is only down by two points. This crucial five seconds gives the main character the opportunity to win the game, but suspiciously, the time on the clock seems to last nearly five minutes. The differences between sports movies and reality are vast. Most notably: 1) The protagonist’s team almost always wins. 2) The game almost always lasts longer than the time left on the clock. 3) The sport often represents or incorporates a character’s personal conflicts. So how do sports movies get away with these unrealistic scenes? When viewers are invested in the movie’s characters, it seems easier to set aside any disbelief. However, some diehard sports … Read entire article »
