briefly mentioned: SGA approves preferred name policy

The Student Government Association passed a resolution last month requesting that students be allowed to submit a name change in the online Pathway system for roster purposes. The preferred name policy is designed to benefit any student who does not go by his or her legal first name. This includes students who use their middle name, those who have an aversion to their first name or those who go by a nickname. After submitting the request for a name change, a professor’s roster would reflect the name on Pathway. Name changes on student ID cards would work the same way. Dean of Students Eric Grospitch said SGA approval could help lead to a decision on the resolution by Mel Tyler, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. One concern that was presented during … Read entire article »

No ifs, ands or cigarette butts: MIZZOU smoke-free policy prompts task force at UMKC

A task force approved by the Student Government Association and the Faculty Senate will start looking at initiatives to convert UMKC into a tobacco-free campus. Similar steps are already in progress on Mizzou’s campus, with a July 1 deadline already established to finalize the removal of designated smoking spaces. “On July 1, we will begin the final phase of our five-year tobacco transition, which will eliminate smoking on campus and in campus-owned or leased properties or vehicles,” said Dr. Lauren Schopp, Mizzou Wellness Program Director. “Prior to July 1, smoking is limited to designated areas on campus.” The implementation of the smoke-free policy at Mizzou was originally intended for January 2014.  After a proposal was presented during a joint session between the Residence Hall Association, Missouri Student Association (MSA) and the Legion of … Read entire article »

Butt out: Resolution will create tobacco-free task force

A resolution to form a tobacco-free exploratory committee was approved 19-4 by the Student Government Association last November. This vote in favor of the committee is expected to prompt a university-wide discussion about replacing UMKC’s designated smoking areas with a completely tobacco-free policy. Amy Johnson, a senior biology major and the Student Representative to the University of Missouri Board of Curators, is spearheading the tobacco-free efforts. Johnson said she met with former Missouri Students’ Association president Xavier Billingsley last year in Columbia. “[We discussed] the possibility of moving their [MU’s] date to go smoke-free up by an entire year,” Johnson said. “When I realized how easily and quickly this would be done, I began to examine the other policies in the [University of Missouri] system.” The UMKC resolution approved by SGA on Nov. 12 made several … Read entire article »

The University of Kansas City?

Chartered in 1929, the University of Kansas City switched to UMKC when it joined the UM System in July 1963. Now the word is spreading that the University may change its name again – back to the original UKC. “It’s not really clear who first may have proposed the idea,” said John Martellaro, director of media relations. The first major mention to the public came May 8, when The Kansas City Star ran an article about the name change. The article quoted Chancellor Leo Morton, who said it is time to act on the “long-percolating idea” of the name change, which he hopes could end UMKC’s stigma as an offshoot of the Columbia campus. In order for a name change to happen, the University must submit a proposal to the UM Board of Curators. The … Read entire article »

New SGA president brings experience and hope for a smooth transition to next year

With the spring semester over, many campus organizations have held elections to transition from one Executive Board to the next. The Student Government Association (SGA), which acts as a liaison between students, faculty and administrators, closed its polls on April 13, electing Danny Riffel as the 2012 president. The other Executive Board members are: Executive Vice President Linnaia McKenzie, Administrative Vice President Joshua Krueger and Comptroller Katie Carlino. Senior Riffel has become familiar with the inner workings of SGA throughout his academic career. He served as scribe for SGA Senate meetings under the direction of prior Administrative Vice President Luke Whitworth. This gave Riffel ample time to become comfortable with the organization and prepare for greater tasks. “That year was definitely a step up for me in levels of responsibility I had to shoulder,” he … Read entire article »

SGA sponsors 4th District At-Large city council forum

Low turnout at the Student Government Association’s (SGA) 4th District At-Large City Council Forum did not stop the lively debate. Candidates John Crawford, Jim Glover and Anne McGregor attended the event Wednesday, Feb. 16 in the University Center Room 106. The other candidates, Ed Pace and Annie Presley, were not in attendance. However, student Carrie Smith represented Presley by reading a prepared statement from Presley, who was attending a dinner held by the Heavy Constructors Association at the time. The forum was moderated by SGA Intern Kaitlin Claren, who allowed each candidate a four-minute introduction and asked two discussion questions. The first question was whether or not the city council should support the proposed Polsinelli Shughart PC office building on the Country Club Plaza. The plan calls for the demolition of the Neptune Apartments … Read entire article »

Campus ‘bullies’ or student activists?

Campus organizations draw ire from vocal students and administration On Dec. 1, Arts & Sciences Student Council (ASSC) learned its ability to allocate funds to Arts & Sciences (A&S) student organizations had been revoked. The decision was made by Assistant Dean of Students Eric Grospitch and Director for Student Life Angela Cottrell after multiple student organizations complained about ASSC. “Throughout the fall semester we had been working with ASSC to encourage them to create and follow their bylaws related to funding student organizations,” Grospitch wrote in an e-mail to U-News editor-in-chief Melissa Oribhabor. “Throughout this process we heard from many student organizations, not simply the Black Law Student Association as you identified, that meetings were cancelled, and funding processes were not communicated to the organizations, resulting in programs and events being cancelled or postponed,” … Read entire article »
