UMKC and Rockhurst University will host a Relay for Life event together to not only help raise money and awareness to help fight cancer, but also honor those, like student Desiree Hines and Professor David Atkinson, who lost their battles.  Relay for Life is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. UMKC’s annual Relay for Life event will be held on Apr. 5 at 6 p.m. at 1100 Rockhurst Rd. at Rockhurst University in Kansas City. Shooting near campus first 2013 homicide in Kansas City

UMKC, Kansas City and Rockhurst security officers responded to an incident at 52nd Street and Troost Avenue on Jan. 3. The suspect, identified as Chandler T. Guinn, 23, was fatally shot by a Rockhurst University security officer, the city’s first homicide of 2013. The security officer shot Guinn after he emerged from an immobilized vehicle that hit another car, pointing a gun at the officers. The suspect died later at the hospital. Police said Guinn’s vehicle was seen ramming into the back of another car on 52nd Street, and his car broke down at the 52nd and Troost Avenue intersection when he attempted to drive away. Guinn was offered medical help after the accident, but refused any assistance. Do you relay?

Relay for Life is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society (ACS). It’s 12 hours long, usually overnight, symbolizing the trials of someone who has cancer. We start as the sun is going down, the same as someone who has just learned they have cancer – there’s a long journey of darkness ahead. But we work together, as teams and as an event, and we walk the track through the night until we reach the brilliant light of morning. Relays happen in 23 countries around the world, and this is not the first year UMKC has taken part. Last year, with a goal of $35,000, the Rockhurst University and UMKC Relay ultimately raised about $42,000 to help battle cancer.
