Mr. President, you’re wrong
In the recent State of the Union address, President Obama outlined a series of bold proposals that will increase access to high-quality education. Among them were initiatives to make quality early education accessible to every child, to tame the spiraling cost of college, and redesign the country’s high schools to meet the needs of the real world. The President called for a new College Scorecard to show parents and students “where you can get the most bang for your educational buck.” These proposals complemented other efforts to strengthen the middle class, including calls to raise the minimum wage and reform immigration. Education was one of the major themes of the President’s annual speech delivered to Congress and the country. The President said, “Tonight, I propose working with states to make high-quality preschool … Read entire article »

Increase funding for mental health services: Tragedy sparks flood of proposed legislation
Over 200 Americans are shot every day, 47 of them children and teens. Every day, 87 people die from gun violence, 33 of them murdered. Every day, eight children and teens die from gun violence. Every day, 183 people are shot, but survive their injuries. Last week President Obama told the nation, “In the month since 20 precious children and six brave adults were violently taken from us at Sandy Hook Elementary, more than 900 of our fellow Americans have reportedly died at the end of a gun – 900 in the past month. And every day we wait, the number will keep growing.” The attention of several lawmakers has once again turned toward gun control. Historically, gun-control legislation comes to national prominence after a high-profile shooting. Many pro-gun-control organizations believe the … Read entire article »

SATIRE: President Obama, Santa Claus for the 47 percent
I visit Wal-Mart almost every week, and each visit brings a new surprise. If it isn’t dodging the sight of butt cracks and excess cleavage only to later encounter them on The People of Walmart, it’s being evacuated from the store because of an active meth lab found inside a shoplifter’s purse. People have no shame. On Black Friday, I saw a bearded man wearing a red suit in line at the register. It piqued my curiosity. A steadfast opponent of government spending, I feel it is my duty to be watchful and make sure those in front of me at the checkout pay with their own money. I watched as the man pulled out an EBT card bearing the name “Santa Claus.” Father Christmas was using my money to buy his groceries. I decided … Read entire article »

Students rough the campaign trail
Now that election week has finally arrived, it’s safe to say that many are ready for the campaign season to end. This is especially true for students who have blazed the campaign trail for weeks now, anxious to see if their hard work paid off. Caleb-Michael Files and Babajide Ajisafe, both juniors at UMKC, have juggled school and contributing to this year’s presidential election with diligence and planning. Files is the Western Missouri Organizer for the Vote Mob coalition, an organization working with President Obama’s campaign. During the past three weeks, Files said he has put in roughly 40-50 hours per week. “Although our organization works with the president, I just want to see people vote,” Files said. “I most enjoy registering people who haven’t voted before and seeing their eagerness to vote for … Read entire article »

Obama-Romney video wars: Mitt Romney makes a valid point about the 47 percent
A video of Mitt Romney stating 47 percent of the country will automatically vote for President Obama, because they are dependent on government aid, was released last Monday. This percentage refers to the share of Americans who do not pay federal income taxes, many of whom receive government financial assistance. The video was secretly taped at a fundraiser dinner party in May, attended by contributors to his campaign. He was clearly speaking to please them. The video went viral, and Romney has been under public attack since then. The Republican Party retaliated by sharing a video of President Obama speaking at Loyola University in 1998 about how he agrees with redistribution of wealth from the rich to the poor. While many college students focus on issues of marriage equality, abortion, financial aid and health … Read entire article »
Obama addresses rising student loan debt
As student loan debt tops $1 trillion, President Obama’s “college road trip” has opened dialogue on how to ease the pressure on students. “In America, higher education cannot be a luxury,” Obama said. “For some time now, I’ve been calling on Congress to take steps to make higher education more affordable – to prevent these interest rates from doubling, to extend the tuition tax credit that has saved middle-class families millions of dollars, and to double the number of work-study jobs over the next five years.” In a Saturday address, President Obama warned that if House Republicans and the White House cannot reach an agreement, more than 7.4 million people will each average paying an additional $2,800 in interest payments over the course of a decade. The Stafford loan interest rate will hit 6.8 percent unless the House and White House can agree to additional allocations of $6 billion before July. The President has … Read entire article »

Obama has been a success
People constantly say how President Barack Obama is failing at his job by passing harmful legislation or simply not doing anything by not passing beneficial legislation. This is the general idea held by media sources and politicians across the board, and this idea trickles down to my fellow associates. I am not writing this as an Obama advocate, a left-winger or a Democrat. I am writing this as an American citizen. Unfortunately, the Democratic Party tends to not stand by its accomplishments when the heat is on by Republicans. A perfect example was the past mid-term elections where Democrats didn’t take credit for the positive things they did in the first two years under President Obama while the Republicans were simultaneously rallying the American public against them. What’s interesting is that the data from … Read entire article »

Waving goodbye to our Bill of Rights
On New Year’s Eve, President Obama signed into law the closest demonstration of dictatorship and communism that America has seen. The National Defense Authorization Act for the 2012 fiscal year gives our country’s leader authorization to detain U.S. citizens indefinitely if they deem to be – in his definition – belligerent. Fellow citizens, this is in my opinion the first step towards religious persecution (most likely of Christians), one world order, and the end of our seemingly happy lives as we know it. The irony of the law is that, in reality, it is simply a consequent product of the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001. Can’t recall this act? Look a little bit closer. The title itself is an … Read entire article »
