A look at student housing at UMKC
Of about 9,000 UMKC undergraduate students, 1,430 live on campus in one of three buildings: Oak Street Residence Hall, Oak Place Apartments or Herman and Dorothy Johnson Residence Hall. Kristen Abell, director of Residential Life, said each building serves a different student population with different needs. “We have different staffing in each of the facilities based on the student population, and we provide different programming based on those populations, as well,” she said. “Students living in the residence halls are required to purchase a meal plan, while students living in the apartments are not.” Oak Street, the oldest of the three, opened in August 2004. It houses approximately 550 students, most of who are in the first year of the six-year medical school program. Co-ed by suite, Oak Street Hall has a high-tech … Read entire article »

Cost of name change needs to be justified
Chancellor Leo Morton announced a name change proposal in May for the University of Missouri – Kansas City. The change from UMKC to the University of Kansas City is speculated to raise awareness about the university and attract the most “talented students,” according to Morton. Although the chancellor may have valid reasons to back up his beliefs, this proposed change has a much greater downside. The primary concern is the unnecessary cost of the change, along with several smaller issues. This is not to criticize the chancellor or the university, but it is still important to acknowledge the opinions of the student body. When University of Missouri – Rolla changed names, the cost totaled about $500,000. UMKC insists financing will come from private donors and tuition would not increase to fund the potential … Read entire article »

Pickleman’s Gourmet Cafe plans mid-September opening at Oak Place
In addition to Pizza 51, Subway, Sahara and Kin Lin, students will have a new Oak Street restaurant to choose from when Pickleman’s Gourmet Cafe opens, offering toasted sandwiches, pizza and soups. Pickleman’s will occupy the first level of Oak Place next to the Oak Nails salon, previously occupied by Red Mango. Construction began in late July. Pickleman’s originated in 2005 in Columbia, Mo. Pickleman’s has expanded to 10 locations throughout Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma with several new locations opening soon. Currently, the nearest Pickleman’s to UMKC is at 135th Street and Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park. “Pickleman’s does really well in college towns,” franchise owner Jordan Starke said. “Students seem to really like the food a lot.” Pickleman’s menu items range in price from $3.49 to $11.99, suitable for the average college … Read entire article »

Rented out of house and home
After Spring Break, the semester will fly by, and students may ask, “Where going to live next school year?” If we don’t intend to stay in our current living situations, we have to take initiative to change them. Pulling up Craigslist every day, talking with friends on their way out the door, or driving through desired neighborhoods are among the things I’ve done the past few weeks. Hunting for living spaces this time of the year is a heavy Catch-22. Many of us are locked into contracts until just before the fall 2012 semester starts. Others head home for the summer, upwards of an hour away from Kansas City, and won’t be able to visually look at potential living spaces. This year I ended up living in Oak Place Apartments. Six months … Read entire article »

January 7 Gary Forsee officially steps down as President of the University of Missouri (UM) system. Forsee resigned amid his wife’s battle with cancer. She was in recovery at the time of the resignation. 14 Dr. Henry Louis Gates, a Harvard professor of African-American history who received nationwide attention in summer 2009 after he was arrested outside of his own home in Cambridge, Mass., delivers UMKC’s Martin Luther King, Jr. keynote address. 28 The UM Board of Curators recommends tuition increases at all four UM schools. UMKC students will see tuition increase 4.8 percent beginning in summer 2011. A particularly brutal winter leads to multiple class cancellations. Red Mango becomes third Oak Place business to close in past year
Like Larry’s Subs and Taco Factory before it, Red Mango at Oak Place Apartments closed without warning or explanation. Posted on the entrance is a simple message thanking customers as well as UMKC faculty, staff and students for their patronage. The message also states that Red Mango has moved to a new location across from Target on Ward Parkway. Associate Vice Chancellor Robert Simmons speculated possible contributing factors for the closing of Red Mango as being “whether the owner had the correct market area” and “a difficult economic environment for food service.” Many students at UMKC feel disappointed and shocked because Red Mango has closed. Red Mango offered a variety of flavors of frozen yogurt and other items such as fruit and protein smoothies. It also catered to the needs of those on … Read entire article »

Parking Operations addresses demolition of former Oak Street Parking Structure
Students returning to UMKC this summer and next fall will have a more difficult time finding parking on the Volker campus. The Oak Street Parking Structure, at 50th and Oak streets, is being demolished to make room for the future Cherry Street Parking Structure, slated to open in August 2012. On May 16, the site of the parking structure was taken over by J.E. Dunn Construction, who will be responsible for the demolition of the current garage and its replacement with a newer, updated parking structure. Built in 1960 as a temporary parking structure, the Oak Street garage is 20 years past its useful life, according to Vice Chancellor of Facilities Bob Simmons. The replacement five-level garage will hold 1,500 spaces, twice the capacity of the current garage. It will also include … Read entire article »
