Alumnus receives present from fans
This past Christmas, UMKC Alumnus and musician Griffen Alexander received a present from his fans and friends. Alexander recently called upon his fans to help him make his second album. In order to make the album, he needed to raise at least $10,000 to pay for the production costs. “Funding an album is challenging at any level, especially when you’re doing it independently and correctly,” Alexander said. In September 1620, the Mayflower left Plymouth, England for a trip across the Atlantic with 102 passengers. After a 66 day-journey, the Mayflower dropped anchor in Cape Cod. In 1621, the first Thanksgiving dinner took place in Plymouth Colony, now Massachusetts, celebrating a successful first harvest and union of Native Americans and English. During the Civil War in 1863, Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday of November as the day of Thanksgiving. In 1941, Congress made Thanksgiving an official national holiday. The U.S. Postal Service issued a commemorative Thanksgiving stamp in 2001, designed by artist Margaret Cusack. Jillian Schleiden Copy Editor Marty Thomas plays five smaller roles in The Producers, but he says Starlight Theatre played the starring spot in introducing him to the world of acting. Thomas lived in Kansas City and New York growing up, traveling between the two fairly frequently. In 1977, 11-year-old Thomas acted in the Starlight production of “Annie.” He enjoyed acting and impressed a few of the main players. Danielle Finley, who played Annie, liked Thomas and put him and his mother in touch with her agent. The agent convinced them to visit New York again and audition for some parts on Broadway. Thomas got a role in a local show, so his mother moved to New York with him to allow him a career in acting. “My mom just packed up and moved with me,” Thomas said. … Read entire article »

Experience takes the lead in Dining Services
Sodexo at UMKC has a new addition leading the dining services team. J.P. Singh, new general manager for Sodexo, brings 35 years of experience to UMKC. He officially starts September 1, 2010. Singh started with Sodexo as a dishwasher at a college in the small town of Chadron, Nebraska. After graduating from Chadron College, Singh took a management position and was transferred to New York City to work for another 15 years.
