Art Sounds: Performance provides poetic reflection on Occupy Wall Street Movement

The Kansas City Art Institute. in collaboration with UMKC, hosted the fifth operatic reading of poet of late Dina Von Zweck’s “A Day In The Park,” with musical accompaniment of the season on Tuesday March 12. Before passing away last December, Zweck wrote the poem during the wake of the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York, primarily writing on the experience of walking through Zuccotti Park. In the poem she describes the park, neighborhood and protestors with meticulous detail, while simultaneously falling into moments of extreme literary surrealism and symbolic writing. Her descriptions are physical as well as emotional, since she also described the feeling that the walk exuded. She addressed the CBS newsbreaks that were being presented during the protest and concluded with the eventual moment of police intervention. The poem … Read entire article »

As of production there have been 12,000 versions of the popular Internet meme uploaded to, the popular video sharing service, YouTube. The Los Angeles Times cited a number of reasons why it felt the meme was nearing its peak, including what it described as an “extravagant” departure from the meme’s humble origins, adoption by a very broad demographic including the elderly, choreographed corporate versions by ad agencies and marketing departments, apparent boredom of video participants, and … Read entire article »

Soda, an antidote for socialism

My trip to New York City last week provided a needed escape from my tribulations back home. It’s difficult to be an activist in Kansas City without enduring ridicule from those who try to silence me by having different political views. The world would be a better place if people just went along with everything I said. They would see this if they just listened to me for once. Despite its numerous merits, my campaign to remove nude statues from the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art failed miserably this past summer. It was inspired by the petition drive to remove the notorious sexting statue from the Overland Park Arboretum. Why must I view art that I find personally offensive? Beauty is a relative standard, and as a native Texan, I think big is beautiful. Unfortunately, there … Read entire article »

Nonprofit grassroots movement seeks student loan debt forgiveness

Nonprofit grassroots movement seeks student loan debt forgiveness

New York lawyer Robert Applebaum was struck with an idea after Obama’s inauguration in 2009. He was watching the cable coverage of the stimulus package debate and realized that if he were relieved of his student loan debt, a $500 per month payment, he could use that money to help struggling sectors of the economy. Applebaum had no website or blog at the time but used his Facebook account to write the original essay that sparked the grassroots movement, “Forgive Student Loan Debt to Stimulate the Economy.” Soon after, the Huffington Post wrote about … Read entire article »

On Friday, Dec. 2, the UMKC Theatre Department opened an exhibit at the Box Gallery in the Commerce Bank building at 1000 Walnut St. The exhibit is called “Form Follows Function,” and its primary goal is to highlight the hard work the costume, lighting and scenic design graduate students contribute to UMKC performances behind the scenes. The exhibit showcases costumes that have been used in UMKC Theatre productions (such as “Our Town” and “Great Expectations”), as well as small-scale replicas of a variety of different sets. Sarah M. Oliver, visiting assistant professor of Costume Technology, spoke briefly about the model sets. “I think a lot of times, the people in the audience don’t realize we do this work for the director,” she said. The scenic design students make models like the … Read entire article »

Faculty Profile: Harris Mirkin

Passion for teaching drives 45-year career at UMKC Teaching is undoubtedly Dr. Harris Mirkin’s passion. Mirkin’s tenure with the Political Science Department has spanned five decades. But his passion hasn’t always been clear. A graduate student at Princeton University in the early `60s, Mirkin wasn’t sure what direction he wanted to take his life. Then he joined the Peace Corps, where he taught students in Ethiopia and traveled to Europe. “I was around 22 or 23 when I went into the Peace Corps,” Mirkin said. “In America, you’re considered young at that age. In Ethiopia, you’re a full-scale adult. It was an experience of being in both a period of my life and a different culture. I was becoming much more aware of who I was.” When Mirkin returned to the U.S., his perspective had changed. “I … Read entire article »
