Let’s execute plan to aid transgender students

UMKC has been noted as the 5th Most Gay-Friendly campus in the country by Newsweek. However, does this sentiment reach the same positivity for the transgender atmosphere? I would say we’re taking steps in the right direction. The LGBTQIA Partnership Committee, handpicked and led by Assistant Dean of Students Eric Grospitch, has specifically discussed amenities on campus which could benefit students who identify as transgender. LGBTQIA Resource Coordinator Jonathan Ta-Pryor recently proposed an upgrade to Blackboard that would allow students with a preferred name to submit it through the website. For example, if I were a female transitioning into a male, I would be able to access a link on Blackboard and request my name be listed as Ross instead of Roze. By intent, this would alleviate awkward and exploitative situations in the classroom for … Read entire article »

LGBT at UMKC

Students discuss school’s gay-friendly reputation Media attention addressing anti-gay bullying and hate crimes, particularly in schools, has raised awareness of discrimination against LGBT individuals. LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning/queer, intersexual and ally/asexual) awareness nationwide. In 2011, Newsweek ranked UMKC as the 5th gay friendly college in America, outranked by only MIT, Stanford University, Tufts University and Bryn Mawr College. The Newsweek ranking stems from anti-discrimination policies on campus and an active LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning/queer, intersexual and ally/asexual) office. UMKC is one of approximately 90 universities in the country with a professionally-staffed LGBTQIA center. At UMKC, the office raises awareness through diversity and sensitivity training. Many faculty and staff members, including residential life employees, go through a “Safe Space” training to better understand students of LGBTQIA backgrounds. Many students view UMKC’s reputation as gay-friendly … Read entire article »

Bingo balls, breakfast and big red carpets

LGBTQIA Programs and Resources hosts fundraising events for scholarships “LGBTQIA Programs and Resources provides advocacy, education and support for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and ally (LGBTQIA) community on campus” according to Joel Bolling, Coordinator of LGBTQIA Programs and Resources. This department is currently working on several projects and events to raise money for its scholarships. Bolling listed the two LGBTQIA scholarships open to all students at UMKC. The Empowerment Scholarship, supported by the Division of Diversity, Access, and Equity, provides emergency funding for students who demonstrate “economic hardship”. This is in part aimed at LGBTQI -identifying students who “come-out” to their families, only to become financially cut off and unable to afford college. Bolling said, “The goal of this scholarship is to ensure that students who support UMKC, being an … Read entire article »

Humor in the eye of the ticket holder: Comedian Kevin Hart stirs up campus-wide debate

Humor in the eye of the ticket holder: Comedian Kevin Hart stirs up campus-wide debate

When comedian Kevin Hart brings his leg of the “Let Me Explain” tour to UMKC on March 8, he may literally have some explaining to do. Ever since it was confirmed by the Activities and Program Council (APC) that Hart would be the spring performer, there has been controversy among students. The biggest trigger seems to be amongst individuals in the LGBTQIA community. The revelation that there was questionably homophobic content in Hart’s material was first brought … Read entire article »

LGBTQIA holds bingo fundraiser at Hamburger Mary’s $1,200 raised to support scholarship

The LGBTQIA Scholarship received a boost at LGBTQIA’s bingo tournament last Wednesday at Hamburger Mary’s. The $500 scholarship was first awarded last year. It was founded with the support of alumnus Paolo Andino from Logo’s “Big Gay Sketch Show.” Hamburger Mary’s pink and purple walls and Hollywood glam-style memorabilia in the Crossroads Arts District served as the backdrop for Miss Daisy Buckët’s (pronounced bouquet) flamboyant performance as a drag queen bingo host. Buckët’s flamboyant personality was received with laughter as she called out the numbers. The winner of each round was awarded with a prize-containing manila envelope. After picking an envelope, Buckët asked each winner to run through the restaurant, and asked not-so-lucky losing tables to pelt the winner with their balled-up bingo sheets. The large showing of customers pleased the organizers. There were so … Read entire article »
