Stone Sour shakes up the Midland
It was loud. It was crazy, and… it was sold out. The popular band Stone Sour, from Des Moines came to Kansas City to do what it does best, play hard rock hard. The $9.89 tickets made it imperative to attend this hardcore experience at the Midland. From teenage girls dressed up like vampires to shirtless, tattooed guys wearing creepy masks, the crowd covered a wide range of ethnicities and ages, all coming together for a one-night-only rave-like show where the music was the only thing that mattered. Almost everyone in the crowd had a beer in one hand, while the other hand was up in the air with a rock’n-roll sign or a middle finger pointing to the back of the theater. Stone Sour walked onstage at 10 p.m. after a great opening … Read entire article »

DJ Kittie gave the turntables one last spin in Kansas City during her “Say Goodbye” party on Thursday, Nov. 15 at the Mosaic Lounge before leaving the following Monday to chase her dreams of fame and fortune in Las Vegas. “My real name is Kelly,” DJ Kittie said. “I actually got my [stage] name from an old friend of mine when I was in the 9th grade. ‘And my heart will go on,’ for Celine Dion
As a music fanatic, I enjoy all types of music, from the latest song playing on the radio to listening to film scores. By no means I am an authority of music. I just enjoy and appreciate the art. Recently, I saw a special about Celine Dion’s life now and her new Las Vegas show at Caesar’s Palace. She is a music icon from Oscar winner to Grammy winner. The Titanic theme song would not be the same without her voice. Her iconic voice is one thing, but watching her as a person was another element. She is a true lady. She is a great role model for any one. Her discipline, warmth toward others, and class totally set her apart. She treats her staff with such kindness and acts with such grace that … Read entire article »

Paper or Plastic?
A grocery store is an interesting place, and for some, it holds a peculiar importance. It’s an arena of sorts where competitors go head to head in a grueling battle of speed, accuracy and wits. “Ready, Set, Bag” is a documentary film directed by Alex D. da Silva and Justine Jacob that sheds light on the practically unheard of sport of competitive grocery bagging. So far, screenings have raised enough funds to provide 18,000 meals to those … Read entire article »

Dr. Sketchy’s draws crowds
Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School takes place every first and third Sunday of the month at 1331 Union St. in the West Bottoms. It is a place where artists come together for a night of socialization, burlesque performance and figure drawing. “It brings a lot of good people together, from people who are established artists all the way down to people who are just starting out, all in the same room,” Amy Farrand said. “It also exposes people to a section of life they would never see, ever. You could do a lot worse with your time on a Sunday night. More fun than church.” The Kansas City chapter of Dr. Sketchy’s has existed for the three years. There are other Dr. Sketchy’s groups in other parts of the country. The first was … Read entire article »
