Do video games provoke violence?: student shares perspective in wake of recent shootings
Increased research into violent video games has been called for in the wake of the Dec. 14 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. The massacre prompted a debate that blames violent video games for these events. Wade Elmore, a UMKC psychology graduate student who is writing his thesis on the topic, believes otherwise. “I think scientifically speaking we can’t make that connection. We have a lot of evidence suggesting there is increased aggression in the laboratory, but that is not the same as real world violence. We just haven’t gotten to the point where we can actually connect what we see in the lab to what might be happening in the real world,” Elmore said. Attendance policies benefit students
Imagine a scenario where all class attendance was optional. Teachers posted all useful information online and no pop quizzes were assigned. The UMKC Attendance Policy states students are required to attend all class sessions except in the case of an unforeseen circumstance. This includes death of an immediate family member, student illness or involvement in a UMKC event. This policy may seem stringent, but professors have good reason to enforce it. According to journalism professor Peter Morello, “I am very strict about attendance. In my view, it really isn’t a question of freedom of choice. It’s more like a contract between student and professor.
