Debt: Something students should care about
UMKC may be the only NCAA Division I school where students care more about parking than athletics. For once in my life, I am surrounded by others who share my apathy for sports. UMKC’s problem isn’t the dearth of sports fans; it’s that many students attend the school solely to obtain a degree, not for the college experience one would expect from a four-year university with 16,000 students. UMKC is trying desperately to lose its commuter school reputation, and it’s easy to understand why. Popular teams help market big-name regional schools like the University of Kansas and University of Missouri. Passionate students enrich the college experience and ensure a school’s longevity through lifelong patronage. Loyal graduates attend games, donate money and inevitably help the school advertise itself by wearing T-shirts and hoodies. Moving from the Summit … Read entire article »

From Jayhawk to Roo: Coach Posey follows her passion
Head volleyball Coach Christi Posey is in the middle of her second season with UMKC. After serving as a top assistant and recruiting coordinator for 11 years with the University of Kansas volleyball program, Posey was offered the head coaching position at UMKC. While she will always have high regards for Kansas as an alumna and former athlete, Posey says UMKC is the right fit. Her team stands 14-8, including 7-3 in the Summit League, after Sunday’s 3-1 victory over IUPUI. “[UMKC] was a place that I knew had great possibilities,” Posey said. “I’m from the Kansas City community. I coached club volleyball here for a number of years and I always thought [UMKC] had a great chance of being successful.” Posey explained how she came to UMKC in 2011. “I had the … Read entire article »

School of Medicine receives $1.5 million donation
The National Institute of Health’s Heart, Lung and Blood Institute recently gave the UMKC School of Medicine a $1.5 million endowment. The new grant will fund a postdoctoral fellowship program for cardiovascular research that will be based out of St. Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute, with a research focus in three areas: general skills for clinical research and specialized skills for outcomes research and hands-on research. St. Luke’s is already recognized as one of the country’s leading outcome research facilities, and the new grant intends to further develop a joint venture between UMKC and St. Luke’s in clinical and outcome research in the region. In the new program, candidates will conduct research to identify outcome variables, pinpoint areas of clinical care for improvement and engineer innovations to overcome gaps in existing healthcare. “There is … Read entire article »

Senior Will Robson, from Hexham, U.K., earned Summit League Championships All-Tournament team honors last season after taking 2nd overall. There is more to Robson than golf. “I think I’m a pretty laid back guy who likes to have a laugh and joke around with people,” he said. “I would say that I’m pretty easy to get along with.” The 5’10” golfer came to UMKC as a freshman and posted an average of 79 that first season. “He is someone who made the most of his opportunity,” said Head Golf Coach J.W. VanDenBorn. “He works his tail off and is always searching for a way to make himself better.” After playing soccer and rugby growing up, Robson started playing golf seriously at age 14. “I plan on turning pro when I graduate,” he said. “I’ll give that a shot … Read entire article »
