The Brick

Where you’re more than just another brick in the wall By going to the same bar every night, you expect to see the same folks every time. These people may not be your friends, but hey, at least everybody knows your name. The Brick, one of Kansas City’s most infamous bars, is located at 18th and McGee streets in Kansas City. The small nighttime hotspot boasts a patronage that may just as well have been plucked straight from an episode of “Cheers.” During a visit to the Brick, you’re sure to find Sam Malone’s equivalent pouring drafts with a smile and Norm Peterson’s quipping left and right. Plus, everyone’s favorite mailman, Cliff Clavin, ranting about this and that will be there as Dr. Frasier Crane sits by, psychoanalyzing his every word. These “usuals” … Read entire article »

Making Movies and Pop Pistol own the night

Making Movies and Pop Pistol own the night

On occasion, I’ll find myself in a bar, chatting up with a pretty lady. And if I like her, I’ll phase out the live music playing in the background and focus my attention on her. However, if I become uninterested, I’ll shift my focus more toward the band on stage. But on March 25, my attention never drifted from the recordBar’s stage. The opening band was an ethereal sounding three piece called Pop Pistol. Many of Pop Pistols’ tracks … Read entire article »

2011 Kansas City Film Fest preview

And ACTION! This week, April 6-10, the Kansas City Filmmaker’s Jubilee is rolling out the red carpet to present its annual Kansas City Film Fest. For five days, more than 135 films will be screened across four theatres, while a lengthy list of visiting and local artists will converge on KC to participate in workshops, panels, parties and screenings. At the end of the fest, some very hard working, up-and-coming filmmakers will walk away with not only bragging rights but cash prizes, too. UMKC has had a long history with the KC Film Fest since its inception in 1997. When Jubilee founder Fred Andrews noticed Kansas City’s burgeoning community of avid filmmakers, he enlisted the help of UMKC, along with the Kansas City Art Institute, the Film Society of Kansas City and the Independent … Read entire article »

Local Church Screens ‘The Laramie Project’

Local Church Screens ‘The Laramie Project’

In fall 2010, gay teen suicides sparked national debate over whether these injustices should be considered hate crimes. However, this is not the first time anti-gay hate crimes have received national press. On Oct. 7, 1998, a 21-year-old student at the University of Wyoming named Matthew Shepard was beaten to death by Russell Henderson and Aaron McKinney in the small town of Laramie, Wyo. Having met Henderson and McKinney at a local bar, Shepard was offered a ride … Read entire article »

All Around Town: Downtown Kansas City

All Around Town: Downtown Kansas City

Your weekly Kansas City neighborhood guide Sure. We’ve all heard of and probably been to the Sprint Center and Midland by AMC, and most of us probably have some interesting stories from our late night run-ins at the Power and Light District. But surprisingly, Downtown doesn’t get very much credit outside of P&L and the Sprint Center. The word “Downtown” is sometimes used generically in KC to refer to the entire urban core, but in this article I … Read entire article »

VD Party rocks KC

With the promise of a free concert, whispers of adventures, escapades and a public spin the bottle table many UMKC students braved the lines Friday, Feb. 11 to be a part of Afentra’s VD Party at the Midland Theatre by AMC. The VD Party is put on annually by local radio station 96.5 The Buzz and features a free concert, spin the bottle, a kissing booth and enough pheromones to heat things up for many flirtatious concert goers. Unfortunately The Midland was filled to capacity by 7 p.m. and many unlucky concert goers never made it in the doors. Before the show began, the tension, excitement, and anticipation filling the venue was thicker than the smoke lingering above the crowd. It was during this time that many felt the joys of kissing Meredith … Read entire article »

‘A Christmas Carol’: A fresh take on a classic

The Christmas favorite, “A Christmas Carol,” is being performed at the KC Repertory Theatre this holiday season. The show features a diverse, talented cast, including many UMKC students and alumni. This is the KC Rep’s 30th anniversary of the classic tale, and although the story itself is more than 160 years old, the KC Rep keeps it fresh and entertaining for both those who attend the show annually and those who are experiencing it for the first … Read entire article »

DL Hughley at the KC Improv

DL Hughley at the KC Improv

DL Hughley, one of the “Kings of Comedy,” entertained at the KC Improv Friday night. Hughley performed a special engagement sold out twice to diverse audiences. Hughley, an African-American, is known for his racy, oftentimes controversial comedy, which makes light of differences between different groups. Hughley has been criticized by the Reverend Al Sharpton, among others, for incorporating themes some consider to be “irreverent.” The crowd, however, was responsive and engaged throughout his performance. Ten minutes into the … Read entire article »

Karo to KC Improv for 18 & over special engagement

Karo to KC Improv for 18 & over special engagement

Aaron Karo returns to the KC Improv for a second shot at a crowd he loves at 7 p.m., Nov. 11. “I liked it there,” Karo said. “The crowd was enthusiastic, everyone laughed a lot, we all went out and got drunk after the show.” Karo was hesitant to say his humor was mainly aimed at the college crowd, but is sure most college-aged people will enjoy it. “I’m 31 now,” he said, “so there aren’t a lot … Read entire article »
