food: Fric & Frac a KC favorite for a good reason
A personal favorite of mine continues to please every Americana- style bone in my body, as it has for many Kansas Citians since the late ‘70s. Located on 39th street in Kansas City, Fric & Frac offers your everyday pub food and burgers with a great assortment of drinks To change it up, I went during the evening hours, rather than my usual late afternoon time. With the difference in time came a difference in crowd, though this was not necessarily a bad thing. The only table available in the somewhat loud, yet kid-friendly environment was a two-seater right by the front door. This worked out well, for the fact that those who entered rarely noticed us sitting down, which helped create calmness for us amidst the storm of food-goers. But it … Read entire article »

words of wisdom: How to treat your broke friends
For college students, being broke can become a fixed characteristic in much the same way as being female or Caucasian. It’s an immediately perceivable trait: tall, blonde, broke. There are stereotypes associated with the just-getting-by lifestyle, like 5-year-old shoes, substituting hand lotion for hair product, and knowing many generic substitutes to name brand products. To those living above the broke-student class line, the persistently poor can sometimes be a difficult lot to understand. What’s most bothersome to the broke is being repeatedly put in situations where one has to restate their meager means. When a more uptown friend wants to meet at a bar that serves nothing under $8 and charges $10 just to enter, the broke buddy has to explain in vague, dodging terms, that they can’t afford it From my … Read entire article »

music review: Local reggae band 77 Jefferson brings beachy vibe to KC
Local band 77 Jefferson combines reggae and rock to create its own signature sound. Members Joel Castillo, Miles Brown, Justin Howard, Kyle Crouse and Richard Faught have spent the past five years touring the country, playing nearly 1,000 shows. The band has also collaborated with big reggae names such as Jah Roots and Fortunate Youth. The band’s fourth album, “Truth and Love,” is a compilation of heartwarming love songs and mellow harmonies. The track “Keep on Movin’” is reminiscent of an uplifting Bob Marley song. The lyrics say, “Don’t you give up, no never give in, you got to keep on movin’.” “Keep on Movin’” is the only track with an essence of rock. A mild guitar interlude toward the end keeps in stride with the steady tempo. “Waitin’ On” is an endearing … Read entire article »
