CD Review: Good Recovery

CD Review: Good Recovery

Whether in an evening workout or an afternoon drive, by now you’ve probably heard “Not Afraid”, Eminem’s first single off his new album Recovery. The song holds merit with its cut throat honesty (in typical Eminem fashion) and its call-to-arms chorus. The song is a perfect forbearer of the album that backs it up. Standing at 17 tracks, the album carries rich diversity with evidence of the different hip hop styles Eminem has explored throughout his … Read entire article »

Campus Welcomes New Student Union

Campus Welcomes New Student Union

[flgallery id=3 /] UMKC’s University Center once functioned as the primary student union on campus, where students could eat, study and check out campus organizations. As far back as ten years ago, administrators began looking into an alternative to the University Center to accommodate the growing student population and the ever-changing needs of the students. Then, four years ago, a plan for a new student union was put into motion. Friday, the official UMKC Student Union opened a … Read entire article »

Dating 101: The difference between a journalist and a columnist

Margaret Fuller was the first female war correspondent. Matthew Brady was a pioneering photographer. Katherine Graham, Carl Bernstein, Ben Bradley and their modern day contemporaries from Peter Jennings, Anderson Cooper and Katie Couric are all great journalists. I, however, do not necessarily consider myself a journalist. True, I write a weekly column for a small newspaper, but instead of covering global wars, stock market ups and downs or even community obituaries, I write a weekly diatribe of my often times frequent, social shortcomings. Occasionally, I am asked how in the hell did I land a paying gig reporting on the disasters that have turned out to be my dating life. Believe it or not, there are a few requirements that someone must have besides a bottle of bourbon and a working laptop. First: You should probably at … Read entire article »

It might get loud

The UMKC Athletics Department has brought the men’s home basketball games back to where they ought to be: home. Fourteen of the 15 home games this season will be played at Swinney with the one remaining game at Municipal Auditorium. “[We are] having more home games than ever before and more on campus than ever before,” Head Coach Matt Brown said. “These are two big steps for us, playing on campus and having more home games … Read entire article »

Some things change…some just don’t

Some things change…some just don’t

Summer is gone. Gone, I tell you! Get over it. Ok, maybe I should take my own advice. The end of summer means change. I love change and embrace it with all the drama that may go with it. But why is it the things that should change, never do? And the things that you don’t want to change always do? UMKC is staring down a huge abyss of change at the moment. Most talked about is probably the … Read entire article »

Please don’t chew on my pens

Please don’t chew on my pens

There is always that one kid in grade school whose appetite never submits to the mere seven food groups. Yes, that one child, where lunch just isn’t enough, where snack time is anytime in a classroom full of craft supplies. Jacob Ballard sat next to me in first grade, and his insatiable hunger gave way to countless craft-casualties, including paper, erasers, glue, pencils and glitter. Most importantly in this array of flavors was his favorite, the crayon. … Read entire article »

UMKC Police Department receives accreditation

The UMKC University Police Department (UMKCPD) received its accreditation this past July at the international conference. The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) granted UMKCPD their accreditation after a rigorous review process. In April, UMKCPD went through an on-site process to gain their accreditation. Obtaining the accreditation means the University police department meets the commission’s progressive standards through a voluntary process. The accreditation examines and certifies the UMKCPD’s policies, management, operations and support services. “The accreditation status is for a period of three years during which the agency must submit annual reports, attesting to continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited,” UMKCPD Captain Joseph Rucinski said. By gaining its accreditation, UMKCPD joins University of Missouri – Columbia and the University of Missouri – St. Louis, the only other university … Read entire article »
