Are you ready for this?
A few issues ago, I wrote an article about how excited I was to enter the wonderful world of college. I looked forward to what great things were awaiting me, and I couldn’t wait to begin the rest of my life. People stared at me in disbelief when I explained my excitement and now I know why. I was naïve. No, scratch that, I was horribly naïve. The first week of classes weren’t too bad. I took notes, … Read entire article »

The accidental billionaire’s future wife
Remember last semester, when I wrote about finding love, my dream of breaking into the Tiffany & Co. on the plaza for my dream ring and pole dancing (eh, exercising) my way into my future husband’s arms? And just an issue ago I decided to focus on school only, since it’s my last year, no more pain, life is short, love hard, love now, blah blah blah? Well, scratch that. I lied. Yes, I’m still going to … Read entire article »

Greeks are people, too
It was well over two years ago when I made a decision that would change my life and quite possibly change me. When I came to UMKC, I was pretty shy. I didn’t know anyone, I was the quiet and nerdy kid that always hung out in Cherry Hall with the rest of the freshmen that had yet to get a life. I wanted to do something interesting. I wanted to become a part of something that would … Read entire article »

Unification of UMKC
UMKC has an underlying problem I believe most students see but are unwilling to deal with. The lack of unity among commuting students, students who live on campus and those who live in the surrounding area. I transferred from Washburn University in Topeka, Kan. Even though it is a commuter campus like UMKC, Washburn created a college experience for both commuters and students who lived on campus. I found myself constantly on campus for different … Read entire article »

Why can’t we all just get along?
In New York, Park51, a proposed 15-story Islamic community center and mosque near Ground Zero, spawned a national controversy over the First Amendment, Islam, national security and cultural sensitivity. In Florida, a fanatic pastor planned to burn copies of the Quran on Sept. 11, sparking a similar firestorm over the very same issues. Ironically, he used the building of Park51 as justification for his deplorable actions. While Park51 and the Quran burning are protected under the First … Read entire article »

The end is near
OK, well not really. The school year has just begun and already May 7 seems so close, yet so far away. Just 236 days away. But when you’ve been in college for seven plus years, 236 days feels like it will be here tomorrow. We’ve all made it through the first few weeks of classes. During the week before school started, the weather was so hot and humid in Kansas City it made one wish to … Read entire article »

It takes an Einstein (Bros.)
I took a five year long break in the middle of my education at UMKC. Upon returning, I was delighted to find three coffee shops directly on campus. I remember a time when Roos stood in long lines at Royall Hall for robo-coffee poured from vending machines created circa 1980. Oh, how we dreamed there would someday be a real coffee shop with a human to make us mochas. Now there is a coffee shop in Royall Hall, the University Center and the Student Union. I was once fired from a now out-of-business coffee shop, so I am a coffee expert. I knew I had to try each one to see how they fared. First, I went to the Starbucks in the University Center. My first visit, they had someone there who wasn’t trained; … Read entire article »

How did I end up a Roo?
In my life, I don’t let choices make themselves. Admittedly an over-thinker and oftentimes a perfectionist, the plans I make for the future are of vital importance to me. After all, not just any ol’ Joe Schmoe makes the cut into medical school these days. Competition is fierce when it comes to higher education and as a result, my college search aimed for top-of-the-line academia and a plethora of résumé-building, character-developing student organizations to be available at … Read entire article »

A new year
Bri Ibanez Forum Editor Just this May, I was aching to get out of school. I had myriad things to look forward to: going to Arizona to visit some family, spending the summer with my friends before they left for colleges of their own, hanging out with my boyfriend and relaxing. I did all of those things and more, but at some point in July, I began to long for school. I couldn’t wait to get back, … Read entire article »
