Cutting my losses
In 2008, I began to delve into the world of anthropology. What a vast, confusing, and very textual world it was, but interesting all the while. Anthropology is a broad study of five subfields in the study of humans: Cultural anthropology, linguistics, archeology, sociology and biological anthropology. My emphasis was cultural anthropology. I was, and still am, intrigued by all cultures of the world. How they speak, dress, dance, what food they eat and what music they listen … Read entire article »

‘Do I have a booger?’ U-News staff apology and retraction
Dear University News readers, A forum piece entitled “Do I have a booger?” was published in last week’s issue of U-News. The article was indisputably offensive and condescending to the people it described and there was no legitimate excuse for its publication. All remaining issues were pulled form U-News bins on campus and in the city Wednesday, Sept. 29. Additionally, an online apology and retraction letter was issued by our culture editor, Nikki Bomgardner, who authored the forum article. As a newspaper, we have an ethical, moral and social obligation to publish content that is factual, balanced and reflective of our diverse readership. “Do I have a booger?” did not live up to these standards, and U-News is working to ensure that we adhere to the highest journalistic standards. While the U-News staff collectively … Read entire article »

Letter to the Editor
Hello. I’m sure it has already been brought to your attention the controversy surrounding the “Do I have a booger” article. I do not believe the writer wrote with the intention of being racist or coming off as bigoted. As an African-American student at UMKC, I understand the complaints being raised from other students. However, I think this is an opportunity to explore the larger issue at hand. I think that African-American students are embarrassed by how the writer portrayed the characters in her article. It is only my theory that the source of the embarrassment comes from the reality of the situation. Do many African-Americans speak in the dialect the writer portrayed? Yes. Isn’t it true that this dialect is many times viewed at as uneducated or inferior to “standard … Read entire article »

Letter to the Editor
Dear Ms. Oribhabor, Honestly, I feel outraged that this article was even published in the newspaper, especially as an African-American student it hurts even more. There is a way that one can go about things. I understand that Ms. Bomgardner was upset about her food taking a long time, but how she described the situation was completely wrong. It seems that she is regarding and stereotyping all black people into a certain “ghetto” subculture. She didn’t have to include the Ebonics, “Scuse me ma’yam wood ya poo’ fowud, dey makin’ it fresh.” Also the fact that she rhetorically asked “Does every construction worker, couple on a nooner, blue-collar worker and crack-head lookin’ for acheeseburger/dollar (whichever comes first) have to stop, stare and keep staring?” That was not necessary at all. It was very derogatory … Read entire article »

Election? What election?
Ding-dong. Pause. A middle-aged man answered the door. “Hello sir,” I said. “My name’s Nathan and I’m here to talk to you about the upcoming election on Nov. 2…” “Election? What election? We have an election this year?” he replied. “Haha. Good one,” I said. He stared at me with a confused “What kind of a-hole are you?” look on his face. I had a hard time believing he was serious, but in retrospect, I shouldn’t have been surprised given the … Read entire article »

Making friends is difficult
“Hi.” How can a simple two-letter word manage to cause a grown man like myself such anxiety, dread and heartache? The easy answer is: I don’t know. So I ask, “Why do I do this to myself?” I’m 30 years old and I’m still in school. Granted, I took about five years off from the textbook grind, but here I am, going on one year at UMKC with a majority of other students almost half my age. As I look … Read entire article »

‘Adventure Time’: Absurdity at its best
Adventure time. C’mon, grab your friends, we’ll go to very distant lands with Jake the Dog, and Finn the Human, The Adventures never end, it’s Adventure Time! These are the lyrics that start the theme song of my favorite television show, “Adventure Time with Finn and Jake.” The show comes on Cartoon Network, and it follows two best friends, Finn and Jake, through their adventures in the Land of Ooo. Ooo is a vast land where you … Read entire article »

Consider my agenda, too!
Wasting time: the bane of my hurried, “dormie” existence! Over the past two weeks, I have attended more meetings and accordingly wasted more minutes and hours of my precious time than I could even have dreamt of during all of my oft-monotonous high school years. I’d like to take a trash compactor to all the time slots I’ve dedicated to sitting in awkward rolling chairs and see how much time I could have saved by removing … Read entire article »
