Counseling Center reaches out to prevent violence,self-injury: Variables often go beyond mental illness

Is mental illness the real culprit? The string of recent mass shootings has led to questions about how violent behavior can be prevented through better counseling and mental health services. According to UMKC Counseling Center research, out of 716 clients last year, approximately three percent indicated that they had intentionally caused serious injury to another person in their life. Eight percent has made a suicide attempt. “Violent behavior, harming someone else may be ‘related’ to mental illness but not ‘predicted’ by mental illness,” said Marita Barkis, Director of Counseling. “In risk assessment or ‘threat assessment’, one needs to focus on a variety of variables.  I would never bet on mental illness alone.  There is a difference.” For students who may be dealing with mental illnesses, the Counseling Center has many services available such as … Read entire article »

‘Miss Representation’ Feminist documentary tells story of female struggle for power in a male-dominated society

“Miss Representation,” a documentary by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, highlights the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and challenges the media’s portrayal of women. The Counseling Center, Department of Communication Studies, UMKC Friends of the Library, K-Roo Student Media, Career Services, Women’s Foundation of Greater Kansas City, WIN for KC and Girl Scouts of NE Kansas and NW Missouri co-sponsored a screening last Tuesday in the Student Union Theater. It was free and open to the public, but pre-registration was required. Some notable names within the documentary are Margaret Cho, Katie Couric, Geena Davis, Rosario Dawson, Jane Fonda, Nancy Pelosi, Condoleezza Rice, Gloria Steinem, Daphne Zuniga and Rachel Maddow. UMKC not so dry after all …But campus alcohol consumption trails Missouri average

UMKC has been a dry campus since it joined the University of Missouri System in 1963. “Dry campus” is a term used for the banning of alcohol at colleges and universities, regardless of a student’s age or intention to consume elsewhere. Counseling Center clinical social worker Dale Voigt-Catlin said UMKC is just below the state average in alcohol consumption of the 20 Missouri colleges and universities who are members of the Partners in Prevention (PIP) coalition, which includes both wet and dry campuses. The percentage of students who have consumed alcohol in the past year tallies at 75.85 percent, while PIP schools averaged 77.85 percent. Additionally, among students who drink, the percetnage who binge drink at UMKC is well below the PIP average of 41.8 percent. Need counseling? UMKC offers its help

Counseling is available through the Counseling Center located at 4825 Troost Ave. building. Students have eight free sessions per academic year. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Stress is the new norm

For the first time in five years, Americans are reporting a decrease in stress level, according to an article in USA Today written by Sharon Jayson. This even includes college students, who often attempt to balance classes, work, relationships, finances and families. Survey results from the American Psychological Association say that in 2011 the average stress level was 5.2 out of 10, which is down from the 6.2 recorded in 2007. A Brigham Young University study estimates approximately three percent of all college students attempt suicide. The numberat UMKC, according to the Counseling Center’s Clinical Social Worker and Alcohol and Drug Prevention Program Coordinator Dr. Dale Catlin-Voigt, is closer to one percent.
