With the cost of living and tuition rates on the rise, many students are forced to rely on student loans and other forms of financial aid. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, student loan debt has climbed by $633 billion since 2003 and has become the second-highest form of consumer debt after mortgages, replacing credit card debt. The idiocy of the ‘birthers’

Last October, I volunteered for several local campaigns, knocking on doors and making phone calls to registered voters. My volunteerism consisted of asking survey questions and recording responses, the vast majority of which were mundane and unmemorable monosyllabic “yes” and “no” grunts. One phone call, however, I remember quite well. ‘Breakfast with Socrates’: food for thought

“Breakfast with Socrates” is like having a drink with your cousin, the philosophy major: funny, clever, thought-provoking and occasionally annoying reading best done in small bits. Author Robert Rowland Smith is a British author and journalist who writes and speaks about the philosophy of life. In this book, Smith takes events from our everyday lives and sums up what famous philosophers, authors and poets say about the subject, from Homer to Karl Marx and Shakespeare to Machiavelli. References to pop culture keep the analogies fresh: “Sex and the City,” Barack Obama, Jim Carrey in the film “The Truman Show” and DC Comics.
