Student organization hosts auto show on the quad
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), consisting of students from the School of Computing and Engineering (SCE), hosted an auto show in front of Flarsheim Hall last Wednesday, with help from Mid-America Packards. The show included the SAE’s own Baja Buggy, built for international competition in 2010 and 2011, as well as several well-maintained Packard cars. The vehicles were on display from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday. Glen, the owner of one of the displayed Packards, shared information about his car and about the Packard Motor Car Company, which bought Studebaker in 1954 and stopped production in 1958. His car, repainted to its original aquamarine-esque color, had been stored in Atchison under a leaky roof with several cats before Glen bought it 26-28 years ago. John, the owner of one of the other Packards, said his 1932 model is currently worth about $250,000. The Baja Buggy on display is not the … Read entire article »

Graduation brings uncertainty for SAE vice president
Villecillos, a mechanical engineering student, will graduate next month having been the vice president of SAE, as well as a member of two engineering honor societies. He said he has enjoyed his time at UMKC. “It’s in the inner city, so we have a lot of teachers that actually have experience,” he said. “It’s not just teachers that are used to academics, it’s people who have gone and worked and they come back and teach. It’s pretty helpful.” His favorite course within the engineering program was statics. “I think it’s the first real engineering class I took,” he said. “It’s supposed to be a hard subject because it’s a lot of work, but the professor made it fun and interesting.” Villecillos first became interested in engineering in high school, when he joined a team that was building a car. The leader, a mechanical engineer, inspired Villecillos. “I showed up as … Read entire article »

SAE president enjoys knowing how things work
SAE President Jesus Zamarripa-Ortega, already has a job after he graduates. He will work with a vehicle research facility in Ohio, hopefully with the new Acura model. Zamarripa-Ortega said he has enjoyed his time in the mechanical engineering program at UMKC. “I like that it’s a small community,” he said. “It’s almost a personal relationship between the teachers and students. And I really like that. Especially when you have a problem or you’re falling behind in a class, you can ask them. It feels like they care about you.” His favorite class within the program focused around feedback control systems, which he said is probably the most difficult course in the mechanical engineering program. Along with helping to build an all-new Baja Buggy for competition this year, Zamarripa-Ortega also competed with the old buggy with last year’s SAE. The May competition in Pittsburg, Kan. did not turn out as well as Zamarripa-Ortega and others … Read entire article »
