Tearing down the Troost wall
It is rare to come across a politician with the refreshing candor and sincerity of Mayor Sly James. Discussions of race can easily become contentious, especially in a city haunted by a history of strained race relations. In an area where previous mayors have failed, James has made tremendous progress. Last fall, I covered a town hall at UMKC devoted to the mayor’s first 100 days in office. Hosted by the NAACP – Young Adult Conference and other sponsors, the mayor fielded questions about progress in key policy areas. I was genuinely impressed by the mayor’s call to work past the barriers that divide us. “We have to stop this nonsense of north and south of the river and east and west of Troost,” he said. “We need to quit acting like there’s a … Read entire article »

Student vets at UMKC: Group helps student vets adjust to post-military life
The Student Veteran’s Organization (SVO) is kicking into high gear with new plans and new recruitment. The group, organized at UMKC in spring 2010, has doubled the attendance at its weekly meetings, according to Vice President Naomi Carter. Between 20 and 30 people attend meetings regularly, and an additional 100 are Facebook fans, Carter said. At the beginning of the semester, SVO made several efforts to get the word out about the group. Carter said SVO met with the Student Government Association (SGA) over the summer, and has since been invited to make a presentation during one of the upcoming meetings in hopes of creating an SVO senate seat. The group has also worked Student Affairs, which sent emails to the nearly 300 students receiving GI (veteran’s) benefits at UMKC, informing them of the group. “One … Read entire article »

Student loan default rates jump
Announcing a rise in the student loan default rate, the U.S. Department of Education gave reasons for students to rethink educational loans, given the prospective job market. The national two-year cohort default rate, which measures a designated group of borrowers, rose to 8.8 percent last year, from 7 percent in fiscal 2008, according to data released last Monday. More than 3.5 million borrowers began repayment in fiscal 2009, but more than 320,000 had already defaulted last fall. The statistics represents an increase of 80,000 compared to the previous year. Overall, the rates highlight the FY 2009 cohort, consisting of borrowers whose first loan repayments came due between Oct. 1, 2008, and Sept. 30, 2009, but who then defaulted before Sept. 30, 2010. Although the numbers are worrisome, they remain substantially lower than the peak the … Read entire article »

Coffee please, decaf.
My father and I try to have a meal together once a week. A few weeks ago, we had breakfast at First Watch. The waiter asked, “Coffee?” “No thanks,” my dad said. The waiter looked to me. “I’ll have some decaf.” “Decaf,” he asked with his mouth agape. “Yes,” I patted my huge round belly, “I’m pregnant, you see.” “Yes, of course,” he said as he stumbled away bewildered. This was not the first awkward moment that happened when I ordered decaf. Coffee … Read entire article »
