The Alabama Shakes opened the doors to the Uptown Theater on March 11 to approximately 1,800 screaming fans.
The show was originally scheduled for Sunday, March 8 but was postponed due to bad weather the band encountered in Denver.
Brittany Howard, lead guitarist and vocalist, has concocted the perfect formula for success, considering her band was nominated for several Grammy’s, including “Best New Artist.”
Simply by observing, one can realize how much love these five musicians have for music. To the audience in this world, they are only talented musicians, but their music seems to transfer them into a different universe entirely, one filled with passion and magic.
“We are glad to be here in Kansas City…again,” Howard said.
The band was in town for the second time in less than a year.
Howard is the perfect example of talent. Without even trying, her voice and presence can be felt from the first row to the ...

More than 240 artists from around the nation filled the streets of the Country Club Plaza on Friday, Sept. 21, for the annual Plaza Art Fair, displaying paintings, portraits, photography and clothing.
Many artists consider the fair to be one of the best and most exclusive shows in the country.
“It’s my favorite show to do,” said R.C. Fulwiler, a digital artist who has been to the fair seven times in the past 30 years. “The people really understand my work here and buy it.”
Fulwiler said that in order to be accepted into the show, artists must select three slides of their work and one slide showing the booth’s setup.
“It all depends on the three slides you choose, your booth slide, and ten seconds that you’re exposed to the judges,” Fulwiler said. “It’s not easy to get into the good shows. That’s why you have to have filler shows; to fill in ...

In today’s filmmaking it’s really difficult to find a film so unpredictable, it’s impossible to guess the ending. “End of Watch” is a riveting action thriller with a suspenseful surprise conclusion, which will leave the audience guessing from start to finish.
“End of Watch” follows the lives of police duo Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Zavala (Michael Pena) who have just been assigned to patrol a rough part of Los Angeles. Filled with drug cartels and gangs, these partners are unaware of what’s in store.
The story begins when they discover a secret, making them the main target to the biggest drug cartel in LA.
The acting is marvelous, and the dialogue is pure genius. Not in recent years has there been a film so real and gritty. Granted, the “F bomb” is dropped so many times, it would make for a very deadly drinking game, but no one could deny this is real ...

Crows gathered in anticipation late night Friday, July 20 as the final installment of the Dark Knight trilogy was moments from being released.
For some, this was a night filled with adventure and excitement as they watched Christopher Nolan’s third Batman film turn into the much-awaited blockbuster many hoped it would become.
Others faced a more tragic fate as a gunman killed 12 at a Colorado theater, making this mild action movie into a real life horror film.
Going along the same lines as the 2008 film, The Dark Knight, this sequel begins with a reclusive Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) who has not shown his face in eight years. This once-hero-turned-fugitive vanished into the night after the death of Harvey Dent.
There were no doubts about this final chapter being phenomenal. Director Nolan is not necessarily known for his action flare, but when it comes to Batman, he is able to pull it off. ...

To Rome with Love reflects Woody Allen’s advice, “If my films don’t show a profit, then I’m doing something right.”
Despite poor ratings and a lack of turn out, Allen does it again with his 50th production.
To Rome with Love follows several different story lines, and to some, this may be a discombobulated mess, but Allen relies on the messages behind the stories to give the film its true meaning.
Architect John (Alec Baldwin) has an encounter with his younger self, Jack (Jesse Eisenberg) while walking along the streets of Rome. Jack is just beginning his career, unsure of the direction the world will take him, and unaware of the formation of his very own love triangle. John acts as his inner conscience, attempting to set his former self straight, knowing the fate of every wrong turn.
The second story line stars Woody Allen himself in one of his most personal roles to ...

Aside from the initial concept, The Amazing Spiderman lacks anything to actually make it amazing. This remake, which should have been made years in the future, failed to reproduce the emotional connection experienced watching the original version.
There really is no need to go into plot summary; everyone knows the basic origin of Spiderman, or so one would hope. The only differences from the 2002 blockbuster hit are the girl, the villain and the location where Spiderman attains his powers.
According to comic book fans, this version follows the comic closer.
However, if you are not familiar with the written version, seeing words and images come to life won’t necessarily strike your fancy.
Don’t get me wrong, I love superhero movies. The original Spiderman may have to be one of my favorite movies of all time. Whenever a superhero movie goes beyond action and delves deep into the emotional baggage of the character, the ...

Centered in the minds of two 12 year olds desperate for a sense of belonging and love, Moonrise Kingdom tells the heartwarming story of growing up on an island full of obstacles and hardships.
Directed by Wes Anderson, Moonrise Kingdom shows the developing love between Sam (Jared Gilman) and Suzy (Kara Hayward), who run away together in hope of escaping their harsh worlds.
Sam is an orphaned Khaki scout with wilderness skills to get them anywhere they need. Suzy acts like a stereotypical pre-teen with attitude problems and a strong hate for parental figures.
Her parents (Bill Murray and Frances McDormand) may not be the best role models with their troubled marriage.
But despite her dad’s drinking problem and mom’s need to shout everything through a megaphone, they attempt to have their children’s best interest at heart.
Bruce Willis plays a truly depressed sheriff who lost love and hasn’t been able to recover, while Edward ...

John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) definitely wasn’t the most popular kid growing up, so in order to fulfill his need for friends, he made a wish. He wished his teddy bear could really talk, and that resulted in Ted (Seth MacFarlane). Vulgar speech and excessive partying are only some of what makes Ted—well, Ted.
While the two best friends grow up and conquer life’s greatest hardship, they also get involved with drugs and alcohol. When John’s girlfriend Lori (Mila Kunis) a necklace as opposed to a ring for their 4-year anniversary, she decides to give John an ultimatum.

Hundreds of thousands of women rushed to the box office Friday night for bachelorette parties and girls night’s outs, only caring about viewing Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey in all their glory.
This brilliant idea coming from the past of Channing Tatum could have been transformed into a powerful movie. However, the script managed to leave out one key aspect: a story.
A movie theater bartender, I discussed this film with several women hoping to get drunk and oogle at hot bodies. The answer to the question, “Are you excited about this film?” surprised me since the majority of women could barely wait and couldn’t care less whether or not this film had any substance.
One woman answered with a childlike grin, “As long as I see Matthew McConaughey dance for me, I’m good.”

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World tells the heartwarming story of a world with no choice but to end and the people who change their lives at the end of their life.
The film centers around Dodge (Steve Carell), an unlucky insurance man, who learns his wife has left him for another man. The story takes place in a Scottish kingdom surrounded by bears and harsh wilderness. Merida (Kelly MacDonald), a skilled archer, disagrees with her family tradition of arranged marriage and would instead independently conquer the forest with her bow. When her mother forces her to choose between three inadequate choices competing for her hand, she runs away to the forest and stumbles upon a witch who promises to change her fate by changing her mother (Emma Thompson).

Crazy, Stupid, Love
I’m not one for romantic comedies, but “Crazy, Stupid, Love” is a smart, witty, charming movie.
Steve Carrell never fails to impress with his acting chops, and now, alongside other contemporary top talents in Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, he holds his own and creates chemistry in the film that just pours off the screen.
The plot seems, at first, pretty straightforward, but then takes a few dips and turns, until the movie comes together beautifully in the last act.
The story feels like a British farce on stage, with one thing after another going horribly awry, but then exploding into a storm of chaos that breeds a kind of calm and serenity afterwards.
Carrell plays a man who has been married for almost 30 years, and his wife, played by Julianne Moore, tells him she wants a divorce, and that she’s been sleeping with another man. Carrell then goes on a ...

The summertime is a time when Hollywood chooses to hit viewers up with big blockbusters, over-the-top action films, and movies that have more explosions in them than actors.
It is a time when, as a student, you can turn off your brain and relax for the summer and enjoy a few hours of eye-candy that would otherwise detract you from your studies.
“Transformers: Dark of the Moon” is eye-candy.
Chances are that, if you see this film, you’ve seen “Transformers” and “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” so you will enter the theater with certain expectations based on those two films.
“Dark of the Moon” doesn’t disappoint on expected expectations. It is, through and through, a “Transformers” sequel.
Michael Bay returns as the director for a third outing with the Autobots and Decepticons, only this time Bay seems to have listened to his critics of the last film, albeit he may have listened a bit too ...

In the new film “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” Peter Cullen returns as the voice of Optimus Prime, a character he has voiced time and again for almost 30 years.
Cullen’s career spans over 50 years of voice work. He has given his voice talents not only to various Transformers over the years, but also has been placed in front of a microphone to give voice to such iconic characters as King Kong, Gizmo in the Gremlins films, and Eeyore in his many trips to the world of Winnie the Pooh.
Cullen auditioned for the role of Optimus Prime at a casting house in Burbank, California, explaining that as he read Prime’s character breakdown, he saw that it was “the opportunity of the year.”
In several interviews, Cullen has said that, “Real heroes don’t yell and act tough; they are tough enough to be gentle, so control yourself.”

“Super 8″ is ABrams’s third outing as a feature film director, and his first foray into original source material – his previous outings as a director were “Mission: Impossible 3″ and “Star Trek.”
In a summer filled with sequels and franchise movies, “Super 8″ is a refreshing film that captures the wonder of being a child, and punctuates it with a fantastic adventure in the vein of “E.T.” and “Flight of the Navigator.”
The movie centers around a group of kids in 1979 who, while filming a movie, narrowly avoid being killed by a derailed train. The train, however, contains a creature from another world, and one that’s not as friendly as the ...

At 44 years old, J.J. Abrams is now a palpable force in the entertainment industry.
He has directed only two feature films in his over 20 years in Hollywood. “Super 8″ is Abrams’s first foray into directing a film not in an established universe.
His two previous features, “Mission Impossible III” and “Star Trek,” have grossed almost $800 million worldwide, and his success on television is becoming legendary, with hits like “Lost” and “Fringe” leading the forefront of his endeavors.
In his latest film, “Super 8,” Abrams had the chance to fulfill one of his lifelong dreams of working with Steven Spielberg.
“It was such a privilege working with him. He was a hero of mine when I was a kid, and to get to collaborate with him was you know surreal sometimes, and other times just wonderful,” Abrams said.

What do books, gloves, Boulevard beer, art and bad jokes have in common? They were all a part of the 46th Annual Friends of the Library Celebration.
UMKC Friends of the Library is a membership organization who helps support UMKC libraries through funding for collections. By providing an annual gift, Friends of the Library have provided for UMKC’s Dental, Health Sciences, Miller Nichols and the Music/Media libraries.
Before I attended the event, I was unaware of not only how expensive certain library resources cost and how much Friends of the Library helps.
This year, there were twenty-seven gifts provided, totaling $35,000! A few of the gifts were the digital edition of the Illustrated London News (ILN) which cost $9300 and Asian and Islamic art books which cost $996.60.
The cumulative amount given by UMKC Friends of the Library has exceeded $1.3 million.
The night included much conversation between Friends of the Library members, UMKC staff ...

The UMKC Softball team saw off Summit League opponents Western Illinois this weekend with a hard-fought 2-1 series win. The Roo’s improve to 20-12 (7-5 in Summit League play) while the Leathernecks fall to 10-17 (7-5 in Summit League play).
In Saturday’s opening game, an Anna Sokolik double scored Kelly Fischer to give the Roo’s a last-gasp 3-2 victory at the bottom of the seventh. Junior Kaelene Curry had previously scored the two runs which had kept the game level for so long.
Saturday’s second meeting contrasted greatly to the cagey affair of the first. The Leathernecks would bolt into a lead which seen them smash home 8 runs without reply before the Roo’s had a chance to chalk up a run at the bottom of the fourth. Again Curry would be the Roo’s only scorer as the game was called after just five innings with Western 10-1 to the good.

Country music trio Lady Antebellum wrapped up their first headlining tour Saturday, Nov. 20, to a sold out crowd of 2,800 at the Midland by AMC.
The trio, Charley Kelley, Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood, opened their 90-minute set with “I Run to You” and performed a dozen songs before closing with their number one hit, “Need You Now.”
Lady Antebellum first claimed almost instant success with chart-toppers almost three years ago.
Sunday night, the trio was in Hollywood to accept an American Music Award for best country band, duo or group. They were nominated for five awards.
There was plenty of audience participation including singing along, and panties and a cowboy hat thrown to Kelley. Haywood alternated instruments throughout the set lending few opportunities for panty catching.
Scott belted a childhood favorite “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” by Bonnie Raitt. Kelley chose “I’m On Fire,” by Bruce Springsteen, as his personal favorite ...

DL Hughley, one of the “Kings of Comedy,” entertained at the KC Improv Friday night. Hughley performed a special engagement sold out twice to diverse audiences.
Hughley, an African-American, is known for his racy, oftentimes controversial comedy, which makes light of differences between different groups.
Hughley has been criticized by the Reverend Al Sharpton, among others, for incorporating themes some consider to be “irreverent.”
The crowd, however, was responsive and engaged throughout his performance.
Ten minutes into the show, Hughley came out holding what appeared to be a vodka martini with three olives and wearing thick black-rim glasses. The audience came to life.
Hughley’s comedy poked fun at Black and White audience members, and their cultural differences.
The audience was laughing throughout the performance and did not seem to mind Hughley’s non-politically correct sense of humor.
Heated controversy and criticism surrounding the cancelled “DL Hughley Breaks the News” program was nowhere to be found Friday night.

In their 77-year history, more than 3,000 women have performed as Rockettes, and each year, thousands audition.
In 2008, The “Radio City Christmas Spectacular” launched the largest Rockettes tour to-date in 22 cities, performing to an audience of 1 million.
The Rockettes made an appearance on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” the Tony Awards, the Presidential inauguration, the Super Bowl halftime show and on commercials for Diet Coke.
“My vision for the Rockettes and ‘The Christmas Spectacular’ has always been to explore scale and take the precision dance form to new levels, whether in a theatrical venue or an arena space,” said Linda Haberman, ‘Radio City’ director and choreographer. “In my view, the mark of a true classic is that it is timeless, relevant and can be re-interpreted to push artistic boundaries.”

The Mavs have lost three straight games, two straight at home and they slipped to sixth in the league standings.

“I liked it there,” Karo said. “The crowd was enthusiastic, everyone laughed a lot, we all went out and got drunk after the show.”
