Alabama Shakes shakes up Kansas City

The Alabama Shakes opened the doors to the Uptown Theater on March 11 to approximately 1,800 screaming fans. The show was originally scheduled for Sunday, March 8 but was postponed due to bad weather the band encountered in Denver. Brittany Howard, lead guitarist and vocalist, has concocted the perfect formula for success, considering her band was nominated for several Grammy’s, including “Best New Artist.” Simply by observing, one can realize how much love these five musicians have for music. To the audience in this world, they are only talented musicians, but their music seems to transfer them into a different universe entirely, one filled with passion and magic. “We are glad to be here in Kansas City…again,” Howard said. The band was in town for the second time in less than a year. Howard is the … Read entire article »

Blending art and entertainment: Annual Plaza Art Fair attracts students despite steep prices

More than 240 artists from around the nation filled the streets of the Country Club Plaza on Friday, Sept. 21, for the annual Plaza Art Fair, displaying paintings, portraits, photography and clothing. Many artists consider the fair to be one of the best and most exclusive shows in the country. “It’s my favorite show to do,” said R.C. Fulwiler, a digital artist who has been to the fair seven times in the past 30 years. “The people really understand my work here and buy it.” Fulwiler said that in order to be accepted into the show, artists must select three slides of their work and one slide showing the booth’s setup. “It all depends on the three slides you choose, your booth slide, and ten seconds that you’re exposed to the judges,” Fulwiler said. … Read entire article »

‘End of Watch’ thrills with dynamic characters and action-packed plot

In today’s filmmaking it’s really difficult to find a film so unpredictable, it’s impossible to guess the ending. “End of Watch” is a riveting action thriller with a suspenseful surprise conclusion, which will leave the audience guessing from start to finish. “End of Watch” follows the lives of police duo Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Zavala (Michael Pena) who have just been assigned to patrol a rough part of Los Angeles. Filled with drug cartels and gangs, these partners are unaware of what’s in store. The story begins when they discover a secret, making them the main target to the biggest drug cartel in LA. Summer Movie Review: The Dark Knight Rises

Crows gathered in anticipation late night Friday, July 20 as the final installment of the Dark Knight trilogy was moments from being released. For some, this was a night filled with adventure and excitement as they watched Christopher Nolan’s third Batman film turn into the much-awaited blockbuster many hoped it would become. Others faced a more tragic fate as a gunman killed 12 at a Colorado theater, making this mild action movie into a real life horror film. Going along the same lines as the 2008 film, The Dark Knight, this sequel begins with a reclusive Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) who has not shown his face in eight years. This once-hero-turned-fugitive vanished into the night after the death of Harvey Dent. There were no doubts about this final chapter being phenomenal. Director Nolan is … Read entire article »

Summer Movie Review: ‘To Rome with Love’ proves the critics wrong

To Rome with Love reflects Woody Allen’s advice, “If my films don’t show a profit, then I’m doing something right.” Despite poor ratings and a lack of turn out, Allen does it again with his 50th production. To Rome with Love follows several different story lines, and to some, this may be a discombobulated mess, but Allen relies on the messages behind the stories to give the film its true meaning. Architect John (Alec Baldwin) has an encounter with his younger self, Jack (Jesse Eisenberg) while walking along the streets of Rome. Jack is just beginning his career, unsure of the direction the world will take him, and unaware of the formation of his very own love triangle. John acts as his inner conscience, attempting to set his former self straight, knowing the … Read entire article »

Summer Movie Review: The not-so-amazing Spiderman

Aside from the initial concept, The Amazing Spiderman lacks anything to actually make it amazing. This remake, which should have been made years in the future, failed to reproduce the emotional connection experienced watching the original version. There really is no need to go into plot summary; everyone knows the basic origin of Spiderman, or so one would hope. The only differences from the 2002 blockbuster hit are the girl, the villain and the location where Spiderman attains his powers. According to comic book fans, this version follows the comic closer. However, if you are not familiar with the written version, seeing words and images come to life won’t necessarily strike your fancy. Don’t get me wrong, I love superhero movies. The original Spiderman may have to be one of my favorite movies of … Read entire article »

Summer Movie Review: ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ is art house cinematography at its best

Centered in the minds of two 12 year olds desperate for a sense of belonging and love, Moonrise Kingdom tells the heartwarming story of growing up on an island full of obstacles and hardships. Directed by Wes Anderson, Moonrise Kingdom shows the developing love between Sam (Jared Gilman) and Suzy (Kara Hayward), who run away together in hope of escaping their harsh worlds. Sam is an orphaned Khaki scout with wilderness skills to get them anywhere they need. Suzy acts like a stereotypical pre-teen with attitude problems and a strong hate for parental figures. Her parents (Bill Murray and Frances McDormand) may not be the best role models with their troubled marriage. But despite her dad’s drinking problem and mom’s need to shout everything through a megaphone, they attempt to have their children’s best … Read entire article »

Summer Movie Review: ‘Ted’- If ‘Family Guy’ were a movie

This is definitely not your ordinary teddy bear movie. With grotesque language, raunchy images, and surprisingly heartwarming scenes, Ted is sure to make every Family Guy fan crave more. John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) definitely wasn’t the most popular kid growing up, so in order to fulfill his need for friends, he made a wish. He wished his teddy bear could really talk, and that resulted in Ted (Seth MacFarlane). Vulgar speech and excessive partying are only some of what makes Ted—well, Ted. While the two best friends grow up and conquer life’s greatest hardship, they also get involved with drugs and alcohol. When John’s girlfriend Lori (Mila Kunis) a necklace as opposed to a ring for their 4-year anniversary, she decides to give John an ultimatum. In a climatic moment, John is forced … Read entire article »
