Looking for a place to live?
Residential options are abundant near UMKC’s two campuses One of the most exciting aspects of going to college is the opportunity to move out on your own (or with friends). There are many housing options in Kansas City, and finding the right place can seem like a daunting task, but it can be much easier if you know where to look. The residence halls For many incoming freshmen, the obvious housing choice is the dorms or “residence … Read entire article »

The transition from high school to college
What incoming freshmen can do to prepare themselves for college Each semester, UMKC welcomes thousands of new freshmen embarking on the exciting, and often terrifying, experience of going to college for the first time. This can be scary and overwhelming to many. The transition from high school to college is often not an easy road, but there are steps new students can take to make the shift easier. One of the first things a student can do is attend an orientation program. These are held for transfer and freshman students a few times throughout the summer and will help them get familiar with the campus and start the process of getting comfortable with their programs. But once classes start, it is important students understand they are not in not high school anymore. “[College is] … Read entire article »

Good night and good luck
When I came to U-News in the fall of 2009, I did not know if I would be any good at journalism, and I did not know if I would like UMKC. What I did know was I wanted to be a journalist more than I had wanted to be a store manager at Victoria’s Secret, a health teacher, professional rollerskater, gymnast, Mrs. Isaac Hanson or the myriad other goals I’d had in my life. Working … Read entire article »

Henry Louis Gates, Jr. delivers Martin Luther King, Jr. keynote address
Contributions from Mark Linville News Editor When the news broke in July 2009 that Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. was arrested outside his home in Cambridge, Mass., many were shocked. The Cambridge police were called to investigate a possible break-in when Gates was having difficulty opening his own front door after the lock had jammed. This incident sparked a nationwide debate about racial profiling, a problem many minorities in this country still face. Although President Obama publically … Read entire article »

‘A Christmas Carol’: A fresh take on a classic
The Christmas favorite, “A Christmas Carol,” is being performed at the KC Repertory Theatre this holiday season. The show features a diverse, talented cast, including many UMKC students and alumni. This is the KC Rep’s 30th anniversary of the classic tale, and although the story itself is more than 160 years old, the KC Rep keeps it fresh and entertaining for both those who attend the show annually and those who are experiencing it for the first … Read entire article »

Ask a Trainer
Why do I ache after I work out? I’m active every day, but when I actually go to the gym, I get so sore. What’s up? UMKC weight trainer Jeanne Rankin responds: Soreness is caused by the presence of lactic acid in your muscles and microscopic tears on your muscles (you have to break your muscles down to make them stronger). You are most likely to experience soreness in situations such as lifting/running at a higher intensity than you normally do (more sets, more reps/distance, more weight, or shorter rest time) and during eccentric movements (e.g. running/walking downhill makes your quads sore, lowering the weights during biceps curls makes your biceps sore). The best ways to prevent soreness are to get a good warm-up and cool down, drink plenty of fluids and progress slowly … Read entire article »

The University News: UMKC’s independent student newspaper
For the past few weeks, The University News has been in correspondence with what has turned out to be a pressure group that calls itself the movement. This group has engaged in what we consider bullying tactics in an effort to exert its influence on The University News. We will never be manipulated or swayed by harassing tactics or threats of action. Any hints or veiled threats about funding of the newspaper, as implied in some of the correspondence below, smacks of infringement upon First Amendment rights and could endanger academic freedom. Wielding a monetary club is a way to censor journalistic efforts, which we will never tolerate. This is an outgrowth of a Forum column that appeared in the Sept. 27 issue of The University News. The newspaper and the … Read entire article »

‘Do I have a booger?’ U-News staff apology and retraction
Dear University News readers, A forum piece entitled “Do I have a booger?” was published in last week’s issue of U-News. The article was indisputably offensive and condescending to the people it described and there was no legitimate excuse for its publication. All remaining issues were pulled form U-News bins on campus and in the city Wednesday, Sept. 29. Additionally, an online apology and retraction letter was issued by our culture editor, Nikki Bomgardner, who authored the forum article. As a newspaper, we have an ethical, moral and social obligation to publish content that is factual, balanced and reflective of our diverse readership. “Do I have a booger?” did not live up to these standards, and U-News is working to ensure that we adhere to the highest journalistic standards. While the U-News staff collectively … Read entire article »

Campus Welcomes New Student Union
[flgallery id=3 /] UMKC’s University Center once functioned as the primary student union on campus, where students could eat, study and check out campus organizations. As far back as ten years ago, administrators began looking into an alternative to the University Center to accommodate the growing student population and the ever-changing needs of the students. Then, four years ago, a plan for a new student union was put into motion. Friday, the official UMKC Student Union opened a … Read entire article »
