The Health Journal: The great milk debate

The See Results  series has covered proper exercise, eating good foods, nipping cravings and keeping an eye on ingredients. In the final installment, we will consider how milk plays a critical role in seeing results. Some professionals are at odds whether milk is good for people trying to lose weight. If it is good for weight loss, what kind of milk is most beneficial? There’s a wide variety of milk to choose from. Almond, soy, rice and coconut milks are taking homes by storm these days. But, even those who choose to stick to old-fashioned cow’s milk seem to be torn over whether to drink whole, 2 percent, 1 percent or skim. UMKC personal trainer Shannon Hutsler believes  plant-based milk is best. “Breast milk was made for babies,” she said. “Cow’s milk was made … Read entire article »

Award-winning artist impresses at Kansas City performance

Chrisette Michele impressed a sophisticated crowd at club 7HUNDRED on Sunday, Nov. 11. A live band accompanied her as she crooned familiar songs from her albums. The audience laughed at her impeccable imitations of R&B legends like K-Ci and JoJo, Fantasia, R. Kelly and Anita Baker. The Grammy award-winning songstress entertained with her improvisations  including an on-the-spot creation of an ode to Kansas City. When a gentleman joined her on the stage to play the keyboard, she passed his hat around and everyone gladly pitched in their dollar bills. She even recognized one of her Twitter followers that joined the concert by pulling him on stage and singing to him. Little did she know, he planned to sing to her and did a marvelous job, which surprised onlookers including Michele. Before the show, … Read entire article »

The LGBT community needs to stop the counter-hate

As a Christian, I am against same-sex marriage. Why is it that by adhering to this Biblical standard I am viewed as hateful? Despite the fact that I am genuinely kind and considerate toward gay people, I am categorized as a hateful person by many. My character speaks just the opposite, and I am a little fed up—for a lack of better words—with the counter-hate that Christians are forced to suffer from some members of the LGBT community. I often hear some gay students tsk-ing, performing exaggerated sighs and see them rolling their eyes at the bare mention of the word “God” or “Christian” or “pastor.” The rude looks and discourteous sound effects are the very things that they don’t want done to them. Here’s the truth of the matter: Agreeing with … Read entire article »

Health Journal: See results Part IV: 10 Ingredients or less

While replacing salty and sweet snacks with fruits and other ideal alternatives, considering packaged snacks like 100-calorie packs may be a good plan. In addition to the general nutrition facts, paying attention to the list of ingredients is going to be essential in achieving weight loss goals. UMKC personal trainer Shannon Hutsler explains why. “They taste fantastic and they’re low in calories, but there are probably over 20 ingredients in there. That’s because these products are trying to take nothing and make it taste really good,” she said. Take a look at Kellog’s Special K, for example. A popular go-to in the healthy snack department with low numbers in calories, sodium and sugar, Special K’s product line markets itself as an ideal swap from other options. However, the ingredient lists on these products … Read entire article »

Tips for today’s ‘have-it-all’ woman

In the old days, women sometimes had to choose between getting married and raising a family or getting a degree and pursuing a career. Women today are making “having it all” a reality by putting hard work into both their personal and business lives. This superwoman mentality became increasingly popular in 1965 when Helen Gurley Brown became editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine. At the time, feminists ironically discouraged the have-it-all idea. Unmoved by the opposition, Brown implemented her stance into the magazine and turned a failing publication into a booming success for Hearst Publications. She served as editor-in-chief until 1997 and as the international editor until her death in August 2012. I am a dedicated wife and mother, as well as a full-time student aspiring to advance in the journalism field after I graduate in … Read entire article »

The Health Journal with Shannon Hutsler: Feed the crave

Exercising and healthy eating are essential to creating a wholesome body from the inside out. Having a nutritious diet may sound easy, but cravings are hard to stave off. UMKC personal trainer Shannon Hutsler said the key is not to ignore the craving, but to decipher what your body really needs. “Your body will actually tell you what it is craving,” Hutsler said. “[It will tell you] if it’s craving greens or fish or poultry, carbs even. If we just stop and take the time to listen, we’ll know what our bodies really need.” The idea is to feed the craving with the right food. Instead of indulging on cake or snacking on potato chips, opt for healthier options like berries or brown rice. “Reach for an apple or a piece of fruit instead … Read entire article »

A school of journalism would benefit UMKC

Why doesn’t UMKC have a School of Journalism? There are an abundance of reasons why we should. For starters, we have an impeccable group of professors who are more than happy and capable to groom tomorrow’s successful journalists. As a member of the UM system, we have the connections with the Missouri School of Journalism on the Columbia campus, and there is reason to believe UMKC could have a premiere program without detracting from MU’s, but building off its success. The Cross Cultural Journalism and Mass Media course, for instance, is conducted with both MU and UMKC students via video transmit.  As Chancellor Leo Morton has said, “we are Kansas City’s university.” The potential relationships between UMKC and different news organizations and media businesses through a journalism school would benefit both UMKC, the local community … Read entire article »
