Shooting near campus first 2013 homicide in Kansas City
UMKC, Kansas City and Rockhurst security officers responded to an incident at 52nd Street and Troost Avenue on Jan. 3.
The suspect, identified as Chandler T. Guinn, 23, was fatally shot by a Rockhurst University security officer, the city’s first homicide of 2013.
The security officer shot Guinn after he emerged from an immobilized vehicle that hit another car, pointing a gun at the officers. The suspect died later at the hospital.
Police said Guinn’s vehicle was seen ramming into the back of another car on 52nd Street, and his car broke down at the 52nd and Troost Avenue intersection when he attempted to drive away.
Guinn was offered medical help after the accident, but refused any assistance. Guinn attempted to carjack passing motorists. An employee at a nearby business contacted Rockhurst Security, who whose officer then approached Guinn. He was shot in the chest after pointing his gun at another officer.
Although no children or staff were directly threatened by the incident, UMKC police were stationed near the Edgar L. and Rheta A. Berkley Child and Family Development Center as a precaution.
