Emiel Cleaver explores the Civil Rights era roots of ‘Freedom, Inc.’ Filmmaker Emiel Cleaver’s new documentary “Freedom Is Now” premiered at the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Friday, telling the story of Kansas City’s revolutionary African-American political organization, Freedom Inc. Cleaver is the son of former mayor and current United States Congressman Emanuel Cleaver II and received his master’s degree at UMKC. Cleaver’s subject, Freedom Inc., was founded in 1961 and the documentary is used to show the success of the organization in integrating stores and restaurants in Kansas City on the social front. Death toll rises in Syria
In Syria, the death toll rises after President Bashaar al-Assad continues his deadly anti-protest campaign. Months after the uprising of anti-government protesters, the Syrian government has shown no regression in its forceful efforts to stop the protests. Homs, a city in western Syria, is where the majority of the fighting is occurring. Pro-government forces are continually “shelling” houses and slaughtering their own people. Along with the shelling of houses, government forces are also firing on makeshift clinics and any other sites that could aid anti-government forces, stated by The Economist. Overwhelming mortar and shelling barrage has made living conditions for civilians dire. There is armed opposition against the government forces, but their guns are inferior to the government military who are armed with heavy artillery. Roos finish at bottom of Summit League, completing a disappointing season

Lady Roos cement No. 3 seed in league tournament
The women’s basketball team clinched the No.3 seed for the 2012 Summit League Championships this week after defeating IUPUI and IPFW to take its record to 19-10 (10-7 in Summit League play) for the season. The Lady Roos completed a narrow 58-56 victory over IUPUI on Feb. 20 in Indianapolis, Ind. before returning Saturday evening to the Swinney Rec. Center to outshoot IPFW 79-62. UMKC 79 – 62 IPFW In Saturday evening’s home contest, senior Dayon Hall-Jones led the Roos’ offensive attack with 25 points, moving her into 10th place in the UMKC career scoring records with 991 points. Team impresses at Summit League Championships
The track and field team rounded up its weekend in impressive fashion as the men placed 6th (75 points) and the women 5th (63 points) at the Summit League Indoor Championships on Feb. 24-25 in Fort Wayne, Ind. On Saturday, the men’s side saw inform weight thrower Ramon Nelson take silver with a mark of 58-00.25 (17.68 meters). Kris Leverette followed close behind with a bronze medal finish as he marked 57-04.25 (17.48 meters). In the 60-meter dash, Charles Hinton took silver with a blistering 7.08 finish, while Kristen Hepburn took bronze in the 60-meter hurdles (8.34). Lady Roos crush UTPB 7-0
The women’s tennis team stormed to a 7-0 victory against Texas-Permian Basin (UTPB) on Saturday morning in El Paso, Texas. They completed a weekend sweep by defeating UTEP 4-3 on Sunday. Everything seemed to click on Saturday for the Roos, who outclassed the hosting Falcons in doubles and singles play in a contest. The lady Roos won all three doubles contests and defeated the Falcons in all six singles matches. Head Coach Kendell Hale praised the team’s effort while keeping the season goals at the forefront of his plans. “Our team goal this year is of course to win the Conference Championships, which is always where we start,” Hale said. Daniel Baker and Sarah Clarke crowned Mr. and Miss After weeks of campaigning, Daniel Baker was crowned Mr. UMKC against three other contestants. Saturday during halftime of the basketball game, the winners were announced, a perfect end for a week filled with Court Warming activities and events. He represented his Fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon. “I am filled with excitement and happiness that I won. I could not stop smiling for at least an hour after it was all said and done,” Baker said. “Yet I am sad. Over this week I have really bonded with the other candidates, and now it is all done. A Sentimental Gesture: Mother’s tattoo preserves important memory of son Keziah Low, a nursing student, is a mother and tattoo enthusiast. She has 10 tattoos to date, but her most recent holds the most significance. Located on her right shoulder, it illustrates an eye with her son’s reflection in the iris.
