New library scanners provide paper jam relief through smart technology

The new Knowledge Imaging Center (KIC) scanners on campus allow students to save documents electronically with little hassle. The new scanners are able to scan any textbook, magazine or newspaper article, class notes, photos and other materials and send them to an e-mail address or portable flash drive. Pharmacy students reach out to the community for medication challenge The School of Pharmacy was awarded the National Challenge Award in the first-ever Script Your Future Medication Adherence Challenge. This year was the inaugural year for the award, making UMKC one of the first three schools to receive it. Historian of the United States Senate Donald Ritchie discussed U.S. presidential relationships with Congress in the lecture “A Conflicting Legacy” at the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on President’s Day. The event was sponsored by UMKC’s Truman Center. Ritchie is the author of Congress and Harry S. Truman: A Conflicted Legacy, a collection of essays which examine President Truman’s often contentious relationship with Congress. As November’s 2012 presidential election approaches and election campaigns begin to pick up momentum, Ritchie investigates presidential relations with Congress from Truman’s day all the way up to our present presidential system under Barack Obama. Library Read-In celebrates African-American history The first of two parts of the 2012 African-American Read-In, hosted by the University Libraries were filled with poetry, song, laughter, dance and sweet potato cookies. Event host Gloria Tibbs has been an information commons and teaching and learning librarian at Miller Nichols Library (MNL) for 11 years. She opened by thanking her colleagues and UMKC alumni for helping organize the event. She said she’s learned to wear elastic-banded pants and come prepared for the annual Read-In. “I know that I’m going to be fed with food for the soul,” Tibbs said. “And I’ll loosen my belt to make room for more.” The event ran from 3 to 4:30 p.m. last Tuesday in the iX Theatre at MNL and included 17 sharers. UMKC ranked among the ‘Top 75 Best Value public schools’ by ‘The Princeton Review’

UMKC was named one of the “Top 75 Best Value Public Schools” in the nation by The Princeton Review in its 2012 edition of “The Best Value Colleges.” The review categorizes these schools by tuition, financial aid, program offerings, enrollment, location, academic performance and student survey responses. The Princeton Review cited UMKC’s affordability, the Henry W. Bloch School of Management, the Conservatory of Music and Dance, and the six-year med program as reasons for the high ranking. Also noted was the school’s extensive financial aid. UMKC provides free HIV/ STI testing

Last Thursday, UMKC partnered with Student Health and Wellness, the Kansas City, Mo. Health Department and The Good Samaritan Project to sponsor a free health clinic to test for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV. The clinic took place in the Student Union from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The “Know Your Status” program is a free service that offers testing for HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. In addition to testing, the program also offers advice on safe sex and abstinence. The “Know Your Status” clinic usually takes place about twice a month, with two sessions in January and two sessions in February. There will also be two sessions in March.
