NBA Lockout over

The NBA lockout is finally over after 148 days and a bitter fallout a few weeks previous. Early last week, there was talk of professional basketball by Christmas and a proposed 66-game season. Players had been back and forth between the negotiating table and their own organized tours around the U.S., with the most recent being a tour by superstars Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul and Dwayne Wade who played in each player’s respective hometown. Fans were growing more and more frustrated and anxious for ‘the real thing.’ By this time, the blame was being distributed equally after players had denied some seemingly adequate deals and further stretched the lockout. On Nov. 14, the owners proposed a deal where there was a 50-50 split of all basketball-related income, but it was denied. … Read entire article »

Player of the Week: Eilise O’ Connor

This past week the women’s basketball team were on the receiving end of two overtime defeats as they opened up their Summit League conference account for the season. With the team’s record currently sitting at 5-4, the 0-2 conference record does not reflect the valiant efforts of the squad’s performances on two tough road contests versus IPFW in Fort Wayne, Ind. and Oakland in Rochester, Mich. Sophomore guard Eilise O’Connor has been an outstanding performer … Read entire article »

There’s a lot more to tests than studying

Once again, it’s that time of year when late night study sessions fueled by Taco Bell and Red Bull take over our lives. It’s finals season – the scariest week on the academic calendar next to midterms. Students all across campus find various ways to ensure they earn passing grades. Some engage in small group activities, while others find reviewing materials solo to be best. There are those who have spent a considerable amount of time going over test materials and then there are those (like me) who miraculously hit the mark by cramming (which I definitely don’t recommend). Whatever the study style, here are five key practices that every student should exercise to help achieve their finest work. Get plenty of sleep Even though pulling all-nighters has seemingly become a requirement … Read entire article »

Dani Young Graduating with a bachelor’s degree and no regrets

December 16 will mark the end of attending UMKC for many students graduating this semester. Dani Young is one of those students as she graduates this month with a Bachelor of Liberal Arts. “It’s something I have been working towards for a long time and I am ready to move onto the next stage of my life,” Young said. Young chose to graduate at fall semester instead of the traditional spring graduation and said she doesn’t regret it. “I didn’t have enough required credit hours remaining to justify an entire other semester and I chose to focus on my career sooner rather than later,” she said. “I won’t miss the larger ceremony. I think the smaller ceremony will be just as meaningful.” Like many students who are graduating, Young said her mind is turning … Read entire article »

‘Christmas in Song’ is the show to see this season

Who wouldn’t love Seussical? (That’s a rhetorical question)

Who wouldn’t love Seussical? (That’s a rhetorical question)

“Seussical” at the Coterie Theatrer takes the stories of “Horton Hears a Who” and “Horton Hatches an Egg” and weaves them together skillfully with other characters from Dr. Seuss’s works. The Cat in the Hat, probably the most famous of all the characters, functions as the erstwhile emcee, odd character and occasional prankster who helps drive the action. Just like in the traditional tale, Horton, played by Seth Golay, hears voices coming from a speck of … Read entire article »
