Mark Friedell appointed chair of SOM Department of Surgery
Beginning in January, Dr. Mark Friedell will serve as the newly appointed Ralph R. Coffey Endowed Chair of the Department of Surgery for the School of Medicine and Truman Medical Centers. Simultaneously, Friedell will be responsible for more than 90 SOM faculty members, who hold joint appointments at either Truman Medical Center or Saint Luke’s Hospital. Student organization encourages arts and business students to converge
Arts Enterprise (AE), a student organization currently in its third year at UMKC, hosts a variety of events throughout the year. Some of these include Artist Career Day, a workshop series, a national conference and several social activities. Mercury Association helps students build better résumé
Around 15 to 20 students attended the résumé workshop hosted by the Mercury Association, Wednesday, November 30th. The workshop was held at Royall Hall in room 211 from 12 to 2 p.m. The Mercury Association is a student organization that helps provide educational and career opportunities in the communications industry. Sandi Dale from UMKC’s Career Services spoke to students about developing a résumé. Nov. 27 1:40 a.m. Driving Under the Influence Officers arrested a party off campus for driving under the influence and possession of narcotics. 7:43 a.m. Violation of University Rules and Regulations Officers stopped a suspicious party from entering the Oak Place Apartments parking structure. KC STEM expands UMKC’s role in the community
Last week, Kansas City Science and Technology, Engineering and Math (KC STEM) Alliance made a public announcement, regarding intentions to move to Union Station in January 2012. “The KC STEM Alliance is truly a one-of-a-kind model, designed as an overarching entity that will leverage the strengths of its STEM programs in K-12 education, build a solid foundation that will lead to post-secondary education and strengthen partnerships with local and regional STEM industry leaders to help advance our students into the workforce,” Chancellor Leo E. Study: Legalization Impacts College Achievement
Children of undocumented immigrants may struggle more to achieve academic success than children of legalized immigrants, according to a recent study about the effects of legalization on education — perhaps the hottest topic concerning the U.S. educational system in the last decade. Researchers at the University of California-Irvine conducted a survey in the Los Angeles area to uncover links between educational success of various immigrant populations and their respective statuses of residency and naturalization. Consequently, they discovered academic deficiencies among children of undocumented Mexican immigrants compared to children of legalized counterparts. Particularly, they found that children of undocumented immigrants averaged 11 years of education, compared with nearly 13 years for children of legal immigrants.
