Lady Roos on the upswing

The women’s soccer team won its first home game of the season 2-1 against the University of Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday at Durwood Stadium. This improved the Lady Roos’ season tally to 2-5-3. Both goals were scored by sophomore forward Taylor Bare. Her first goal was assisted by Randi Simmons in the 36th minute, and her second goal was assisted by sophomore midfielder Ashley Gann during the second half. UMKC takes tournament title at Kansas Invitational

The men’s golf team traveled to the Kansas Invitational in Lawrence last week and returned with a tournament title and overall score of 874 at the 54-hole course. For the first time in UMKC history, the Roos won a tournament hosted by a major BCS conference member. The Roos outperformed 11 rival teams, including the University of Kansas, which hosted the tournament. Saturday’s 0-3 loss to the University of South Dakota was a disappointment to the Lady Roos, who ended a three-match losing streak on Wednesday with a 3-2 away game victory against the University of Nebraska-Omaha. The softball team kicked off its season on Sept. 17. Rockhurst 4, UMKC 1 In the opening game, the Roos fell 4-1 to the Hawks. Junior Deanna Friese allowed just two hits, while striking out nine over the first four innings of play. The Roos afforded only one run in the contest when senior Anna Sokolik scored in the sixth on fellow senior Megan Ussary’s RBI single to center. The Roos’ Sunday 0-0 draw against Gonzaga was the team’s first season tie. The team now stands 3-4-1, and ties with Western Illinois for 3rd in the Summit League standing.
