Summit League play commences

The Lady Roos lose 3-0 to Oral Roberts in Tulsa last Saturday, erasing the team’s early season winning streak.

The Lady Roos lose 3-0 to Oral Roberts in Tulsa last Saturday, erasing the team’s early season winning streak.

With Thursday’s 3-0 loss to Southern Utah and Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Oral Roberts, the volleyball team’s record dropped to 5-6 overall.

This complicates the goal of first-year volleyball Head Coach Christi Posey to guide the Roos to their first winning season in nearly a decade.

In Tulsa, the Golden Eagles entered the match with an 8-3 record.

The Roos lost the first set 21-25 and the next two sets 17-25 and 13-25.

Ella Meier led the team with 15 assists, bringing her season total to 211.

Nicole Kerkman had 23 digs, and Kelsey Knoche led with 12 total kills.

In the Southern Utah game, the Roos struggled to gain any real momentum.

Playing in front of a crowd of 751 in Cedar City, Utah, the Roos lost in straight sets 18-25, 17-25 and 22-25.

The third set proved to be the most exciting. The score was tied nine times and there were five lead changes before the Thunderbirds took command.

Sophomore Chloe Jarema led the team with seven kills, and Meier once again led the team with 17 assists.

The Roos now stand 0-2 in conference play and 1-3 overall on the road.

The Roos’ next opponent is the South Dakota State Jackrabbits.

The game will be played at 7 p.m. on Sept. 19 at Swinney Recreation Center.
