UMKC receives national recognition for community outreach The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) recognized the University of Missouri- Kansas City (UMKC) for its participation in volunteering and civic engagement, listing the school to the President’s 2010 Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. This honor roll, the highest federal recognition of colleges and universities for service learning and community outreach, has been used to recognize the contributions of higher institutions since 2006. As one of Kansas City’s largest employers, the university is fiscally invested in the area. However, it has maintained a longstanding commitment to effort and service. Congressional internships offered through UMKC’s Truman Center Each year, the Harry S. Truman Center for Governmental Affairs places two students in a government office in Washington, D.C. The Truman Center, which operates under the College of Arts and Sciences, was proposed by the former president in 1969, but not established until 2006. The month-long internship placements, first offered in 2008, are paid for entirely by the Truman Center and Student Services and allow students to earn three credits through the Political Science Department. To be eligible, a student must be a full-time UMKC junior or senior with a minimum 3.25 GPA and have completed a college-level American Government course. Storms shatter Missouri
Joplin, Sedalia damanged by apocalyptic F-5 tornadoes On May 22, Joplin was hit by what was the deadliest single tornado in the country in 60 years. Currently the injured of Joplin number 900 and there are 126 known deaths, according to Fox News. There are many dead, but there are still more people unaccounted for. While some of those that are among the list of the missing are known to be dead, authorities have still not been able to identify them. Rescuers are still scouring through the rubble and destruction looking for survivors. Destroyed buildings number in the thousands, according to The New York Times.
