Dean of Arts & Sciences to step down June 30 After more than five years as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (A&S), Karen Vorst has announced she will step down. The venue for graduation has not always been Swinney Recreation Center. In spring 2006 and 2007, UMKC held campus-wide commencements, including all schools of study, at Theis Park. Briefly Mentioned: Former Roo honored with Pulitzer Prizes

Mike Keefe, 2011 Pulitzer Prize winner for editorial cartooning, had his beginnings at UMKC. Keefe got his start drawing for UMKC’s student newspaper, the University News, but that is not his only affiliation at UMKC. Keefe also served as a math instructor at UMKC, where he accomplished coursework toward his doctorate. You can now find Keefe at The Denver Post who works as the editorial cartoonist. Keefe has been with The Denver Post since 1975. The judges commended Keefe for his range in his cartoons and how he uses “loose, expressive style to send strong, witty messages.” Keefe was astounded by his win. “I am gobsmacked,” Keefe said. “In recent years, the Pulitzer has gone to much younger folks, who are newer in the business. Other News: Kansas City metro police do some weeding on 4/20

April 20, commonly referred to as 4/20, has become recognized as the marijuana holiday predominantly among marijuana users. In an attempt to decrease marijuana use, law enforcement agencies scheduled raids all across Kansas City on Wednesday. “We wanted to celebrate with them today,” Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe said. Police officers on both sides of the state line carried out these raids on in-house marijuana growing operations. According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, 14 arrests were made and 900 plants were seized from the operations. By the early afternoon, officers from an estimated 30 law enforcement agencies in eastern Kansas and western Missouri had raided 20 grow houses and continued their efforts throughout the day. Changes in student permit parking for the fall 2011 and spring 2012 semester: Fall Semester Fall semester permits will be for sale online beginning July 1, 2011. On July 25 tickets will be available for purchase in the Parking Office located on 5115 Oak Street in the Administrative Center, Room 221 Permit sales will be limited and we expect to sell out of permits. To have a better chance of receiving a parking permit, order your permit when online sales begin. Parking for Residential Students Parking for residential students will be on the Hospital Hill campus and permits will be $44 per semester.
