Student orgnization profile: ALAS

UMKC’s Association of Latin American Students (ALAS) is a group of students from Peru, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the United States who focus on providing support for Latino students. “ALAS also provides a base support to the general student body in terms of social, cultural and academic development,” Marissa Garcia, ALAS advisor said. ALAS plans and hosts various events on campus. “We hope to instill in the students and UMKC professors a greater awareness [and] commitment to the needs of the Latino community,” Garcia said. Although Latino students represent fewer than ten percent of all UMKC students, according to the Office of Institutional Research, Assesment and Planning’s fall 2010 Comprehensive Planning Report, they constitute a sizable group. “The Latino community is bigger than most realize,” Garcia said. “While it may seem that there is … Read entire article »

Tips to stay safe

Tips to stay safe

Driving at night The majority of UMKC’s student population commutes to campus, and most commute by cars. Driving exposes students to many elements of danger on the road. One way to stay safe is to always keep your car doors locked and windows rolled up. In some places in Kansas City, car jacking is a big problem. A good time to lock doors and windows up is when you’re sitting at stop lights. Residence hall security Always be sure to keep your … Read entire article »

Save your money on ‘Saved’

Save your money on ‘Saved’

The Kansas City Repertory Theatre’s 2010-11 season opened Sunday, Sept. 19, on a sour note with its latest musical endeavor, “Saved!” The well-respected theater, under the artistic direction of Eric Ronsen, seeks to build on the momentum created with last season’s acclaimed hit “Venice,” now in production in Los Angeles. The inspirationally-intentioned but mostly disastrous “Saved!,” directed by Gary Griffin, revolves around a group of Christian high school students. While the scenario of walking through the halls of … Read entire article »

Dance is an unusual choice

Dance is an unusual choice

Majoring in dance may seem like an unusual choice for an athletic student from Tulsa, Okla., but it suits Gavin Stewart. Now in his third year in the conservatory, Stewart initially came to UMKC as a piano student, but found his options were better in the dance division when they offered him a fellowship during his first summer in Kansas City. “While I was deciding what I wanted to major in, I took the Kansas City Ballet … Read entire article »

Recipe: Barbecue dirty rice

A twist on a New Orleans classic with only four ingredients, this can be done quickly and easily in just one pot. 1 -1 ½ pounds Italian sausage 2 cups Minute Brown Rice (regular brown rice if you’ve got about 45 minutes for it to cook) 1 ½ cups shredded pepper jack cheese 1 13 oz can barbecue baked beans Brown the sausage in the pot, drain, and set aside. Cook the rice according to the package instructions. When the rice has absorbed all the water, stir in the meat, cheese and baked beans. Do not rinse the beans; the liquid adds a lot of flavor. If needed, spice things up with red pepper or hot sauce. This dish goes great with roasted vegetables: chopped potatoes, onions and bell peppers tossed in olive oil and salt … Read entire article »

Tattoo of the Week

Tattoo of the Week

When you think of a person with a tattoo, you may often think of the bad guy doing rebellious things or the bad girl trying to be cool, but that’s not always the case. Tattoos act more as a private symbolization for some people rather than a showpiece for everyone to see. Ashli Johnson is a resident assistant on the second floor of the Oak Street Residence Hall. She recalls getting her first and only tattoo in June … Read entire article »

Ask the cook: Healthy options at the Student Union

Question of the week: What are some healthy options at the Student Union? You have an hour or more between now and your next class and you’re looking for something to eat. Head over to the Student Union, where you can grab something yummy and healthy. Jazzman’s Bakery serves all kinds of treats, from bagels and pastries to salads and sandwiches. If you’re looking to eat healthy, choose a bagel over a pastry and a salad or sandwich over a wrap. Coffee-wise, the same rules apply here as at Starbucks: choose skim milk in your latte. Instead of a smoothie, try an iced coffee with a little bit of milk and one or two packets of sugar. Similar flavor for a fraction of the calories. And ask yourself, “do I really need 20 ounces? Or … Read entire article »

Emoticons: Luv Ltrs

While it’s still socially unacceptable to break up via text, asking someone out or sending your love via text is certainly okay. I<3U: An oldie but goody. Dating 101: Learnin’ when to fold ‘em

Taking a much-needed respite from the grind of early afternoon classes, I decided to meet my friend David to drink and fill up on some empty calories. Admittedly, there is something overtly decadent about indulging in a few libations when you have obligations elsewhere. Thinking about it now as I attempt to win a few new “Dating 101” devotees and Facebook friends, I understand why my mom was in such high spirits on those days we trudged home from school with half the kids from the bus stop. She always smiled with an understanding look while microwaving a few snacks. Now I believe it had less to do with the fact she was happy her offspring were popular and more to do with the bottle of merlot she polished off an hour before we … Read entire article »
