For former UMKC student Caitlin Stone, family was her main motivation for getting her tattoo that depicts an artifact and features a quote from a very popular film trilogy.
Stone has always been close to her father, the term “Daddy’s Girl” can be used in light of the relationship she and her father have.
When Stone’s father was diagnosed with cancer, she wanted to commemorate him and immortalize the family spirit with a tattoo.
“My dad was diagnosed with multiple melanoma last July, which is one reason why I got this tattoo,” Stone said. “Another reason is my family; they absolutely love the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies.”
A combination of her father’s illness and her families’ common interest of watching hours of Pirates and of course, Johnny Depp, were her motives of getting this tattoo.
But why a compass you ask?
“The compass was taken from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies. In these movies, Jack Sparrow navigates using his really old compass,” Stone said.
“And the quote comes from Jack Sparrow’s father [Keith Richards]. He says to Jack ‘Its not about living forever, Jackie, the trick is living with yourself forever.’ Which I think it really fits along with compass,” Stone said.
Much like the relationship that Jack Sparrow and his father, Captain Teague share, Stone and her father have a close relationship.
